Autonomic nervous system dysfunction?

I have symptoms of autonomic nervous system dysfunction, and I am currently taking antidepressants and anxiolytics.
However, I have not undergone any autonomic nervous system testing.
When I asked my attending physician some questions, the answers were unclear.
I would like to know if autonomic nervous system dysfunction causes symptoms to occur daily.
I experience different symptoms every day, and after taking medication for about a week, I still feel no significant improvement.
I believe my condition is quite severe, as I often experience multiple symptoms at once, such as chest tightness, dizziness, and stomach pain, or trembling hands, numbness in my legs, and headaches.
Is this normal for autonomic nervous system dysfunction? If not, I may need to undergo additional testing.
Additionally, I would like to ask if having a lower body temperature is also a result of autonomic nervous system dysfunction.
My average temperature is only in the 35°C range (axillary temperature), sometimes dropping to the low 34°C range, and at other times rising to the high 36°C range.
I find this quite unusual.
Is the temperature dysregulation caused by autonomic nervous system dysfunction, or could I have other underlying issues?

Dr. Wang Chongren reply Psychiatry

The situation described by the patient may fall within the scope of autonomic nervous system disorders.
It is important to determine whether these symptoms occur daily and are related to their lifestyle and other symptoms.
A detailed medical history and clinical neurological examination are necessary for further evaluation.
It is recommended to consult with the original physician who conducted the autonomic nervous system testing, as well as the clinical treating physician, to clarify whether the tremors and numbness in the limbs are related.

Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) disorders can manifest in a variety of symptoms, and it is not uncommon for individuals to experience fluctuating symptoms on a daily basis. The ANS is responsible for regulating involuntary bodily functions, including heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate, and even body temperature. When the ANS is not functioning properly, it can lead to a range of symptoms that can be distressing and confusing.

From your description, it seems that you are experiencing a combination of symptoms such as chest tightness, dizziness, stomach pain, tremors, numbness in the limbs, and headaches. These symptoms can indeed be associated with ANS disorders, particularly when they occur in clusters. It is important to understand that the ANS is divided into two main branches: the sympathetic nervous system (which prepares the body for 'fight or flight' responses) and the parasympathetic nervous system (which promotes 'rest and digest' functions). An imbalance between these two systems can lead to the symptoms you are experiencing.

Regarding the frequency of symptoms, it is not unusual for individuals with ANS disorders to experience symptoms that vary from day to day or even hour to hour. Some people may have days where they feel relatively normal, while on other days, they may experience multiple symptoms simultaneously. This variability can be influenced by factors such as stress, diet, sleep quality, and overall health.
You mentioned that you have been on antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications for about a week without significant improvement. It is important to note that many psychiatric medications can take several weeks to show their full effects, and it may take time to find the right dosage or combination of medications that work for you. It is also crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and any concerns you have regarding your treatment.

Regarding your question about body temperature, the ANS plays a significant role in thermoregulation. A lower than normal body temperature (hypothermia) can indeed be a sign of ANS dysfunction, as the body may struggle to maintain a stable temperature. Normal body temperature typically ranges from 36.1°C to 37.2°C (97°F to 99°F), and consistently low readings, especially if they drop to 34°C or lower, warrant further investigation. This could indicate an underlying issue that may not be solely related to ANS dysfunction.

Given your symptoms and concerns, it may be beneficial to pursue further evaluation. This could include a comprehensive autonomic nervous system assessment, which may involve tests such as heart rate variability analysis, tilt table testing, or other specialized evaluations. Additionally, discussing your symptoms with a neurologist or a specialist in autonomic disorders could provide more clarity and help tailor a treatment plan that addresses your specific needs.

In summary, experiencing a range of symptoms daily can be a characteristic of ANS disorders, and fluctuations in symptoms are not uncommon. It is essential to work closely with your healthcare provider to monitor your symptoms, adjust your treatment plan as necessary, and explore further diagnostic options if your symptoms persist or worsen. Your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking comprehensive care is a vital step towards finding relief and understanding your condition better.
