Ear pain?
I experienced itching in my left ear and used my hand to scratch it.
Afterwards, I felt pain when pressing on my left ear, and it also hurt when I yawned.
Even if my fingers didn't go very deep into my ear, just moving them side to side caused pain.
What could be the issue?

More Info
Ear pain can be a complex issue with various underlying causes, and your symptoms suggest a few possible conditions that may be affecting your ear. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing discomfort in your left ear that is exacerbated by pressure and movement. Here are some potential causes and solutions for your ear pain:
Possible Causes
1. External Ear Canal Inflammation (Otitis Externa): This condition, often referred to as "swimmer's ear," occurs when the outer ear canal becomes inflamed, usually due to infection or irritation. Symptoms include itching, pain, and sometimes discharge. If you have been using cotton swabs or other objects to clean your ears, this could have caused irritation or even a minor injury to the ear canal.
2. Middle Ear Infection (Otitis Media): Although you mentioned that your symptoms are primarily in the outer ear, it’s important to consider that a middle ear infection can also cause referred pain to the outer ear. This is especially true if there is fluid buildup or pressure changes in the middle ear.
3. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: The Eustachian tube helps equalize pressure in the middle ear. If it becomes blocked or fails to function properly, it can lead to discomfort, especially when yawning or swallowing. This dysfunction can be caused by allergies, colds, or sinus infections.
4. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder: The TMJ is located near the ear, and issues with this joint can cause pain that radiates to the ear. Symptoms may include pain when chewing, clicking sounds, or discomfort when opening the mouth.
5. Earwax Buildup: Excessive earwax can lead to pressure and discomfort in the ear. If you have been digging in your ear, you may have pushed wax deeper, causing blockage and pain.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Avoid Inserting Objects: It’s crucial to avoid inserting fingers or cotton swabs into your ear canal, as this can exacerbate irritation or push wax further in.
2. Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the affected ear can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation. This can be done for 20 minutes several times a day.
3. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Non-prescription pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation.
4. Stay Hydrated and Use Decongestants: If you suspect Eustachian tube dysfunction, staying hydrated and using over-the-counter decongestants may help relieve pressure.
5. Consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist: Given the persistence of your symptoms, it is advisable to see an ENT specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including otoscopy, to check for signs of infection, inflammation, or other issues. They may also recommend audiometric testing if hearing loss is suspected.
6. Avoid Allergens and Irritants: If allergies are contributing to your symptoms, try to identify and avoid triggers. Antihistamines may also be beneficial.
7. TMJ Evaluation: If TMJ disorder is suspected, a dentist or oral surgeon can evaluate your jaw and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include physical therapy or a mouthguard.
Conclusion
Ear pain can stem from various causes, and understanding the underlying issue is essential for effective treatment. Given your symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention to obtain a proper diagnosis and tailored treatment plan. Early intervention can prevent complications and help you find relief from your discomfort.
