Delayed menstruation?

I would like to ask about my menstrual cycle.
My last period was supposed to start on September 1 but did not come (the previous one was on August 3).
I received a menstrual induction injection on September 6, and my period started on September 10.
However, as of now, October 16, my next period has not yet arrived.
I had sexual intercourse on September 25 and September 26, but we used a condom throughout, and I pulled out before ejaculation.
Is there a possibility of pregnancy? What other factors could cause a delayed period?

Ping Ping, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/16

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Based on your response, it is unlikely that you are pregnant since you used condoms throughout the entire sexual encounter.
The irregular menstrual cycle, along with the absence of ovulation from the ovaries, makes pregnancy less likely.
The delayed menstruation could be attributed to factors such as insufficient sleep, medication interference, stress, and anxiety.
It may be advisable to seek medical evaluation and treatment.
Sincerely, Dr.

Delayed menstruation can be a source of concern for many women, especially when there is a possibility of pregnancy. In your case, it appears that your last menstrual period was expected on September 1, but you did not menstruate until after receiving a hormone injection on September 6, which induced your period on September 10. Since then, you have not had another period by October 16, and you are wondering about the possibility of pregnancy given that you had sexual intercourse on September 25 and 26, albeit with condom use and withdrawal before ejaculation.

First and foremost, it is important to understand that while condoms are a reliable form of contraception when used correctly, they are not 100% effective. Factors such as improper use, breakage, or slippage can lead to unintended pregnancy. However, if you used the condom correctly throughout the intercourse and there was no ejaculation inside the vagina, the likelihood of pregnancy is significantly reduced.

There are several reasons why your menstrual cycle may be delayed aside from pregnancy:
1. Hormonal Imbalance: The menstrual cycle is regulated by hormones, and any disruption in hormonal levels can lead to irregularities. Stress, changes in weight, and significant lifestyle changes can all impact hormone levels.

2. Stress: Emotional or physical stress can affect the hypothalamus, which regulates the hormones responsible for menstruation. High levels of stress can lead to missed periods.

3. Medical Conditions: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or other hormonal imbalances can cause delayed menstruation.

4. Recent Hormonal Treatments: Since you received a hormone injection to induce your period, your body may still be adjusting to the hormonal changes, which could affect the timing of your next period.

5. Pregnancy: While you mentioned that you used protection, it is still a good idea to take a pregnancy test if your period does not arrive soon. Home pregnancy tests are generally reliable and can provide peace of mind.

Given your situation, if you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, I recommend taking a home pregnancy test. If the test is negative and your period still does not arrive, or if you experience other symptoms such as severe pain or unusual discharge, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a more thorough evaluation, including blood tests or ultrasounds, to determine the cause of your delayed menstruation.

In summary, while the likelihood of pregnancy seems low given your precautions, it is essential to monitor your body and seek medical advice if your period does not resume or if you have any other concerning symptoms. Understanding your body and its cycles is crucial, and healthcare professionals can provide the necessary support and guidance.
