Red and itchy eyes with blurred vision?

I have been seeing a doctor frequently over the past few weeks due to red eyes.
Initially, the doctor diagnosed it as conjunctivitis, but now my eye has suddenly become red again.
The same eye is itchy, and whenever it starts to turn red, my vision becomes blurry, and there is an increase in discharge.
What should I do about this?

Hsu, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/25

Dr. Wang Zhishun reply Ophthalmology

Hello, you still need to see an ophthalmologist for an examination, as it may not be a simple case of conjunctivitis.

Red, itchy eyes accompanied by blurry vision can be quite distressing and may indicate several underlying conditions. Based on your description, it seems you may be experiencing a recurrence of conjunctivitis (commonly known as pink eye), which is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin membrane that covers the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids. However, the symptoms you describe could also suggest other issues, such as allergic reactions, dry eye syndrome, or even more serious conditions like uveitis or keratitis.

Possible Causes:
1. Conjunctivitis: This is the most common cause of red, itchy eyes. It can be viral, bacterial, or allergic in nature. Viral conjunctivitis often accompanies a cold, while bacterial conjunctivitis may produce a thicker discharge. Allergic conjunctivitis is triggered by allergens like pollen, dust, or pet dander and is usually associated with intense itching and watery discharge.

2. Allergic Reactions: If your symptoms worsen in certain environments (like outdoors during pollen season or in dusty areas), you may be experiencing allergic conjunctivitis. This condition can cause redness, itching, and tearing, and it often resolves with the removal of the allergen or with the use of antihistamines.

3. Dry Eye Syndrome: Insufficient tear production can lead to dry eyes, resulting in irritation, redness, and blurred vision. This condition can be exacerbated by prolonged screen time, environmental factors, or certain medications.

4. Blepharitis: This is an inflammation of the eyelid margins, which can cause redness, itching, and crusting. It often occurs alongside other conditions like dry eyes or conjunctivitis.

5. Keratitis: This is an inflammation of the cornea, which can cause redness, pain, and blurred vision. It can be caused by infections, contact lens wear, or exposure to irritants.

6. Uveitis: This is a more serious condition involving inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye. Symptoms can include redness, pain, light sensitivity, and blurred vision. Uveitis requires prompt medical attention.

Recommended Solutions:
1. Consult an Eye Specialist: Since you have already seen a doctor, it might be beneficial to return for a more thorough examination, especially if your symptoms have changed or worsened. An eye specialist can perform tests to determine the exact cause of your symptoms.

2. Use Artificial Tears: If dryness is a contributing factor, using preservative-free artificial tears can help lubricate your eyes and alleviate discomfort.

3. Cold Compresses: Applying a cold compress to your eyes can reduce redness and itching, especially if your symptoms are due to allergies.

4. Avoid Allergens: If you suspect allergies, try to identify and avoid triggers. Over-the-counter antihistamines may also help alleviate symptoms.

5. Maintain Eye Hygiene: If you have blepharitis or conjunctivitis, keeping your eyelids clean can help. Use warm compresses and eyelid scrubs to remove crusts and debris.

6. Contact Lens Care: If you wear contact lenses, ensure you are following proper hygiene and care guidelines. Consider switching to glasses until your symptoms resolve.

7. Follow-Up: If your symptoms persist despite treatment, or if you experience additional symptoms like severe pain, light sensitivity, or vision changes, seek immediate medical attention.

In summary, while red, itchy eyes and blurry vision can often be attributed to common conditions like conjunctivitis or allergies, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and consult with an eye care professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure your eye health is maintained.
