Can you get pregnant during menstruation?

I had sexual intercourse on October 17th using a condom, but it had a hole in it.
There was no ejaculation.
My period started the next day, and it usually lasts for six days.
Now I have some brown discharge.
I'm not sure if I could be pregnant.
I'm sorry to bother you, but I would appreciate your response.
Thank you!

Yi Wu, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/25

Generally speaking, the presence of menstruation indicates that there is no pregnancy, unless it is a false menstruation.

When it comes to the question of whether you can get pregnant during your period, it's essential to understand the menstrual cycle and the factors that influence fertility. Generally, the menstrual cycle is divided into several phases: the menstrual phase, the follicular phase, ovulation, and the luteal phase. Ovulation typically occurs around the midpoint of the cycle, which is when a woman is most fertile.

In your case, you mentioned having sexual intercourse on October 17, which coincided with your menstrual period. Although it is less likely to conceive during menstruation, it is not impossible. Sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, and if you have a shorter cycle (for example, a 21-day cycle), ovulation could occur soon after your period ends. If sperm from intercourse during your period is still viable when you ovulate, there is a chance of pregnancy.

You also mentioned that the condom broke during intercourse, which is a significant factor to consider. Even if there was no ejaculation, the presence of pre-ejaculate fluid (pre-cum) can contain sperm, which could lead to pregnancy. The fact that you experienced your regular menstrual flow following the intercourse might suggest that you are not pregnant, as menstruation typically indicates that the uterine lining is shedding due to the absence of fertilization.

However, the appearance of brown discharge or "coffee-colored" spotting after your period could be due to several reasons, including hormonal fluctuations, the beginning or end of your menstrual cycle, or even implantation bleeding if conception occurred. Implantation bleeding is light spotting that can occur when a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining, usually around a week after conception.

Given your situation, if you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, it would be wise to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. If you take a test and it is negative but you still have concerns or symptoms, consider consulting a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In summary, while the likelihood of getting pregnant during your period is low, it is not impossible, especially with factors like a broken condom and the timing of ovulation. If you experience any unusual symptoms or changes in your menstrual cycle, seeking medical advice is always a good idea. It's important to stay informed about your reproductive health and understand the signs your body is showing.
