Brown discharge
It has been 14 days since I had intercourse, during which a condom was used and I also took birth control pills.
Recently, I've been feeling like my period is about to start! Sometimes I experience dull abdominal pain and thought my period had arrived, but instead, I noticed brown discharge.
I have experienced brown discharge in the past as well.
Is there a possibility of pregnancy, or is my period just about to come?

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Using condoms throughout the entire intercourse significantly reduces the likelihood of pregnancy.
It is possible that your menstrual period is approaching.
If you do not get your period in the next 3 to 5 days, please take a pregnancy test to confirm.
Sincerely, Dr.

Brown discharge can be a confusing symptom, especially when you're trying to determine whether it indicates an upcoming menstruation or a potential pregnancy. Let's break down the possible causes and what you might consider in your situation.
Firstly, brown discharge often occurs when old blood is expelled from the body. This can happen at the beginning or end of a menstrual period, which is why many women experience it as a premenstrual symptom. If you have a regular menstrual cycle, brown discharge could simply be a sign that your period is approaching. It’s common for menstrual blood to appear brownish when it takes longer to exit the uterus, allowing it to oxidize.
However, in the context of your recent sexual activity, it’s important to consider the possibility of pregnancy. Although you mentioned using condoms and taking birth control pills, no contraceptive method is 100% effective. If you are experiencing brown discharge and have missed your period, it might be worth taking a home pregnancy test for reassurance.
In early pregnancy, some women experience spotting or light bleeding, which can sometimes appear brown. This is often referred to as implantation bleeding, which occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus. However, this is usually lighter than a regular period and may not last long.
The symptoms you describe, such as abdominal discomfort, could be related to either impending menstruation or early pregnancy. Hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle can cause cramping and discomfort, which can be similar to early pregnancy symptoms.
If you are experiencing persistent discomfort or if the brown discharge continues or changes in color or consistency, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including a pelvic exam and possibly an ultrasound, to determine the cause of your symptoms and provide you with peace of mind.
In summary, brown discharge can be a sign of either an upcoming period or early pregnancy. Given your recent sexual activity and the use of contraception, it’s advisable to take a pregnancy test if your period is late or if you have any concerns. If you continue to experience symptoms or have any doubts, seeking medical advice is always a good step to ensure your health and well-being.
