Severe sore throat?

Hello Doctor: I started feeling discomfort in my throat three days ago.
After seeing a doctor, I was prescribed Diclofenac and gastrointestinal medication.
After taking the medication, I did feel somewhat better for a while, but at night, I wake up with throat pain whenever I swallow saliva, which has been affecting my sleep.
Initially, there didn't seem to be any phlegm, but in the past two days, it has started to appear (not much).
Should I continue taking the medication until it's finished, observe for a while, or what should I do? Thank you.

Hello, if you still have symptoms of a sore throat, it is recommended to finish your medication, drink plenty of water, and monitor your condition.
However, if you experience a fever or if the sore throat continues to worsen, you should return for a follow-up examination.
Wishing you peace and good health.

Hello,
It sounds like you are experiencing significant discomfort from a severe sore throat, and I understand how distressing this can be, especially when it disrupts your sleep. Based on your description, it seems that you have been prescribed Diclofenac, which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that can help reduce pain and inflammation, along with a gastrointestinal medication, likely to protect your stomach from potential side effects of the NSAID.

Given that you have been taking the medication for three days and have noticed some improvement, it is important to consider a few factors before deciding on your next steps.

1. Continuation of Medication: If you are experiencing some relief from the pain after taking the medication, it is generally advisable to continue taking it as prescribed. However, if the pain persists or worsens, or if you experience new symptoms, it may be time to reassess your treatment plan.
2. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms. If the sore throat is accompanied by fever, difficulty swallowing, or breathing issues, or if the pain becomes unbearable, you should seek medical attention immediately. The presence of phlegm is also noteworthy; if it changes color (becomes yellow or green), this could indicate a bacterial infection, which may require different treatment.

3. When to Seek Help: If your sore throat does not improve after a few more days of medication, or if you find that your symptoms are worsening, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider. They may want to perform a throat swab to check for bacterial infections such as strep throat, which would require antibiotics for treatment. Additionally, if you experience swelling in your throat, difficulty breathing, or any signs of an allergic reaction, seek emergency care.

4. Home Remedies: In the meantime, consider some home remedies that may provide relief. Gargling with warm salt water, staying hydrated, and using throat lozenges can help soothe your throat. Humidifiers can also add moisture to the air, which may ease throat discomfort.

5. Follow-Up: If you decide to continue with your current medication, plan to follow up with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve within the next few days. It’s important to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about how you are feeling and any side effects you may be experiencing from the medication.

In summary, continue taking your medication as prescribed while monitoring your symptoms closely. If there is no improvement or if your condition worsens, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice. Your health and comfort are paramount, and there are various options available to help manage your sore throat effectively.

Take care, and I hope you feel better soon!
