Postoperative issues following anal fistula surgery?
The fistula surgery was 36 days ago, and during my follow-up appointment yesterday, the doctor said I don't need to return for further visits.
However, in my haste, I forgot to ask the doctor some questions, so I would like to inquire here:
1.
Can I engage in jogging or brisk walking exercises?
2.
Should I continue with warm sitz baths? Currently, I have reduced it to three times a day, but if I need to use the restroom outside and cannot rinse, can I use toilet paper to wipe? When will I no longer need to do warm sitz baths?
3.
If I eat out and the food is seasoned with chili (the mildly spicy kind), is it prohibited?
4.
The wound has healed, but sometimes when I sit, I experience a swollen, painful discomfort at the site.
Is this normal? Thank you.

Dr. Ke Fangxu reply Surgery
1.
Yes.
2.
If the wound has completely healed and there is no drainage, soaking is not necessary.
It’s understandable if it’s inconvenient when you’re out.
The principle is to maintain cleanliness as much as possible.
3.
It's fine; you can resume a normal diet one month after the surgery.
4.
This is normal; the sensation should disappear in about a month.

After undergoing anal fistula surgery, it's common to have various concerns regarding recovery and post-operative care. Here are answers to your questions based on medical knowledge and typical recovery protocols.
1. Can I do jogging or brisk walking?
Generally, light physical activities like brisk walking can be resumed a few weeks after surgery, depending on your comfort level and the advice of your surgeon. Jogging may be more strenuous and could put pressure on the surgical site, so it’s advisable to wait until you feel completely comfortable and have received clearance from your healthcare provider. Typically, patients are encouraged to listen to their bodies and gradually increase activity levels as tolerated.
2. Should I continue warm sitz baths?
Warm sitz baths are beneficial for promoting healing and alleviating discomfort after anal surgery. While you have reduced the frequency to three times a day, it’s generally recommended to continue them for at least a few weeks post-surgery or until you feel comfortable. If you find yourself in a situation where you cannot take a sitz bath after using the restroom, using soft toilet paper to gently pat the area is acceptable. However, be cautious not to irritate the surgical site. You can gradually reduce the frequency of sitz baths as your comfort improves, but many patients find them helpful for several weeks.
3. Can I eat food with chili or spicy seasoning?
After anal surgery, it’s often recommended to avoid spicy foods, including those with chili, as they can irritate the digestive tract and potentially lead to discomfort during bowel movements. Spicy foods may also exacerbate any post-operative sensitivity. It’s best to stick to a bland diet initially and gradually reintroduce other foods as you feel comfortable. If you notice any discomfort after consuming spicy foods, it may be wise to avoid them for a longer period.
4. Is it normal to feel a throbbing or uncomfortable sensation when sitting?
Experiencing some discomfort or a throbbing sensation around the surgical site is not uncommon during the recovery phase. This can be due to inflammation or sensitivity in the area as it heals. However, if the pain is severe or worsening, or if you notice any signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge), it’s important to contact your healthcare provider for further evaluation. Generally, mild discomfort can persist for several weeks, but it should gradually improve.
In summary, recovery from anal fistula surgery can vary significantly among individuals. It’s crucial to follow your surgeon’s specific recommendations and listen to your body. If you have any concerns or experience unusual symptoms, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance. They can provide personalized advice based on your recovery progress and overall health.
