Yellow stool

Hello, doctor.
I've been experiencing abdominal pain these past few days, but my bowel movements have only been small, about the size of a bar of soap, and they are mostly wet.
If they were any wetter, it would be diarrhea.
A few days ago, the color was more normal, but today it is yellow.
Why is this happening? Thank you!

Ms. Chen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/10/29

Dr. Chen Shidian reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Hello, Miss: This is likely a case of benign irritable bowel syndrome, which is a dysfunction of digestive motility.
It is advisable to adjust your diet to include more easily digestible foods, reduce intake of milk and fatty foods, and manage stress.
If necessary, gastrointestinal medications can be taken for adjustment.

Yellow stool can be a concerning symptom, and understanding its potential causes is essential for addressing any underlying gastrointestinal issues. The color and consistency of stool can provide valuable insights into a person's digestive health. In your case, experiencing abdominal pain along with the presence of yellow, small, and wet stools suggests a few possible explanations.

One common cause of yellow stool is the presence of undigested fat, which can occur due to malabsorption. This can happen when the body is unable to properly absorb nutrients from the food consumed, often due to conditions affecting the pancreas, liver, or intestines. For instance, conditions such as celiac disease, chronic pancreatitis, or liver disease can lead to malabsorption, resulting in yellow, greasy stools that may float.

Another possibility is that the yellow color may be due to an increase in bile salts in the stool. Bile is produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder; it helps in the digestion of fats. If there is a disruption in the normal flow of bile, such as in cases of gallbladder disease or bile duct obstruction, it can lead to yellow stool. Additionally, infections or inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, such as gastroenteritis, can also cause changes in stool color and consistency.

In your situation, the fact that you are experiencing abdominal pain along with the changes in stool could indicate a gastrointestinal issue that needs to be addressed. Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) could also manifest with symptoms like abdominal pain and changes in stool consistency and color. IBS, in particular, can lead to alternating patterns of diarrhea and constipation, and it may also cause mucus to appear in the stool, which can sometimes be mistaken for a yellowish substance.

To address your symptoms, it is advisable to start with dietary modifications. Consuming a diet that is low in fat and high in fiber can help regulate bowel movements and improve overall digestive health. Foods that are easy to digest, such as bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (often referred to as the BRAT diet), can be beneficial during episodes of gastrointestinal distress. Additionally, staying hydrated is crucial, especially if you are experiencing diarrhea.

If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is important to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional may recommend tests such as stool analysis, blood tests, or imaging studies to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. They may also consider prescribing medications to help manage any gastrointestinal conditions that may be present.

In summary, yellow stool can result from various factors, including malabsorption, bile flow issues, or gastrointestinal infections. Given your symptoms of abdominal pain and changes in stool consistency, it is essential to monitor your condition closely and consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management. Taking proactive steps in your diet and seeking medical advice can help address your concerns and improve your digestive health.
