Right axillary swelling and pain?
I have swelling and pain in my armpit.
When I press it hard with my hand, white pus comes out followed by blood-tinged fluid, but there is still a lump.
It hurts when I press it, and I had similar symptoms before that resolved on their own.

More Info
Understanding painful swelling under the right armpit can be concerning, especially when accompanied by symptoms such as pus and blood. Based on your description, it seems you may be experiencing an infection or an abscess in the area. Here’s a detailed explanation of potential causes, symptoms, and recommendations for management.
Possible Causes
1. Infection: The presence of pus and blood suggests that there may be an infection, possibly a bacterial one. Common infections in the armpit area can include folliculitis (infection of hair follicles), abscesses, or even lymphadenitis (infection of the lymph nodes).
2. Abscess Formation: An abscess is a localized collection of pus that can occur due to bacterial infection. It often presents as a painful, swollen area that may feel warm to the touch. If you are pressing on the area and noticing pus, it is likely that an abscess has formed.
3. Lymphadenopathy: Swelling in the armpit can also be due to swollen lymph nodes, which can occur in response to infections in the body. The lymph nodes may become enlarged as they work to fight off infection.
4. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as hidradenitis suppurativa can cause painful lumps in the armpit area. This chronic skin condition leads to the formation of painful lumps under the skin, which can become infected.
5. Other Causes: Less commonly, swelling in the armpit could be related to more serious conditions such as tumors or cysts. However, these are less likely if the swelling is associated with infection and pus.
Symptoms to Monitor
- Pain: The pain you experience when pressing on the area is a significant symptom. If the pain is severe or worsening, it may indicate a more serious infection.
- Fever: If you develop a fever, this could indicate that the infection is systemic and requires immediate medical attention.
- Redness and Warmth: Increased redness and warmth around the swollen area can indicate an active infection.
- Changes in Size: If the swelling increases in size or does not improve over time, this warrants further investigation.
Recommendations
1. Seek Medical Attention: Given the symptoms you described, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional. They may perform a physical examination and possibly imaging studies to determine the cause of the swelling.
2. Avoid Squeezing: While it may be tempting to squeeze the swollen area, this can exacerbate the infection and lead to further complications. It is best to leave the area alone until evaluated by a doctor.
3. Antibiotics: If an infection is confirmed, your doctor may prescribe antibiotics to help clear the infection.
4. Drainage: If an abscess is present, it may need to be drained by a healthcare professional. This procedure can relieve pain and help the area heal.
5. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain and reduce inflammation.
6. Follow-Up: After initial treatment, follow up with your healthcare provider to ensure that the infection is resolving and to monitor for any complications.
Conclusion
Painful swelling under the right armpit, especially with the presence of pus and blood, is a symptom that should not be ignored. It is essential to seek medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment. Early intervention can prevent complications and promote faster healing. Always prioritize your health and consult a healthcare professional when experiencing concerning symptoms.
