Delayed Period and Stomach Pain: Could It Be Pregnancy? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Menstrual period is delayed by 6 days, and recently I have been experiencing frequent abdominal pain and diarrhea?

My last menstrual period ended on September 29th.
According to the app, my average cycle is about 29 days, but this month my period is already 6 days late.
I've been experiencing frequent abdominal pain and diarrhea.
In previous cycles, I would suddenly break out in acne and feel dull pain in my lower abdomen before my period, but this time I have none of those symptoms, nor any discharge or spotting.
I had intercourse with my boyfriend on October 10th, which coincided with the app's predicted ovulation period.
He used a condom, but I'm still very anxious and worried that I might be pregnant.
I haven't bought a pregnancy test yet because my cycle was 35 days in April, so I'm unsure if my cycle has suddenly become irregular again or if I might actually be pregnant.
I'm very scared.

1.
If condoms were used consistently, pregnancy should not occur.
2.
A delayed menstrual period may be due to irregular cycles, and frequent abdominal pain is concerning; it is advisable to seek medical attention.
3.
It is recommended to take a pregnancy test; if the result is negative, you can feel reassured.

When it comes to a delayed period and stomach pain, many women often wonder if these symptoms could indicate pregnancy. In your case, you mentioned that your last menstrual period ended on September 29, and now it is six days late. You also noted experiencing stomach pain and frequent bowel movements, which can be concerning.
First, let's address the possibility of pregnancy. You mentioned having unprotected intercourse on October 10, which coincided with your estimated ovulation period according to your app. However, you also indicated that your boyfriend used a condom during intercourse. Condoms are generally effective at preventing pregnancy when used correctly, but no contraceptive method is 100% foolproof. Therefore, while the chances of pregnancy are lower due to condom use, they are not entirely eliminated.

The symptoms you are experiencing—stomach pain and changes in bowel habits—can be attributed to various factors. Stress, dietary changes, hormonal fluctuations, or even gastrointestinal issues can lead to stomach discomfort and changes in bowel movements. It's also worth noting that some women experience premenstrual symptoms differently from cycle to cycle. The absence of typical premenstrual symptoms, such as breakouts or cramping, could indicate that your body is reacting differently this cycle, possibly due to stress or other lifestyle factors.

Given that your menstrual cycle has varied in the past (with a previous cycle lasting 35 days), it is possible that your cycle is simply irregular this month. Stress, changes in routine, diet, and other lifestyle factors can significantly impact menstrual cycles. If you have been under stress or have made changes to your diet or exercise routine, these could also contribute to a delayed period.

To clarify your situation, I recommend taking a home pregnancy test. These tests are generally accurate when taken after a missed period, and they can provide you with peace of mind. If the test is negative and your period still does not arrive, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They can help determine if there are underlying issues affecting your menstrual cycle or if further evaluation is needed.

In summary, while the symptoms you are experiencing could be related to pregnancy, they could also be attributed to other factors such as stress or hormonal changes. The use of a condom during intercourse reduces the likelihood of pregnancy, but it is not a guarantee. Taking a pregnancy test will provide clarity, and if your period does not arrive soon, seeking medical advice is a prudent next step. Remember, your health and well-being are paramount, and addressing any concerns with a healthcare professional is always a good idea.
