Health of the Baby at Six Weeks of Pregnancy
Hello Doctor, my last menstrual period was on September 20, 2015, and my last menstrual flow ended on September 24.
I went to the emergency room for a urinary tract infection and was prescribed Step-In tablets for pain relief, 10 mg Cap for inflammation, Pyridium 50 mg tablets for urinary tract symptoms, and Zinnat 250 mg tablets.
I completed the treatment on September 28 and did not take any medication after that.
However, I dyed my hair for five hours on September 30, and my stool was black for three days.
On October 3, I donated 500 cc of blood, and after that, I did not have black stools.
On October 5, I started jogging for 3 kilometers and also took Guarana instant tea and probiotics to help with bowel movements.
Until October 21, my period had not arrived, so I bought a pregnancy test, which showed two lines.
On October 23, I had an argument with a colleague, and afterward, my urine had light pink blood.
On October 24, I sought medical attention and was diagnosed with a 5 cm fibroid.
The doctor said the baby is currently five weeks along and that surgery is not advisable, so I should rest at home.
On October 26, I had another argument at work, and during urination, I noticed a large amount of brown discharge.
I went to the doctor again on October 28, and the doctor prescribed three days of medication to support the pregnancy and an injection for pregnancy support.
I apologize, Dr.
Lu, but will the above conditions affect the health of the baby? My family is worried about the baby's health and keeps urging me to take action.
Is this advisable?

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
1.
Based on your menstrual cycle, the embryo should have implanted after October 5, so the medication and hair dye used in September should not have had any impact.
2.
Most ovarian teratomas are benign; please continue regular monitoring.
3.
It is generally believed that arguments do not affect embryo health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Li-Cheng Lu, Taoyuan Hospital.

More Info
At six weeks pregnant, understanding the health of your baby is crucial, especially given the various health concerns you've mentioned. First, let's clarify the timeline of your pregnancy based on your last menstrual period (LMP) and the events that followed. Your last menstrual period started on September 20, 2015, and you confirmed your pregnancy with a positive test on October 21, indicating that you are indeed around six weeks along.
Regarding your health concerns, it is important to address the medications and treatments you have undergone. You mentioned taking several medications for urinary tract infection (UTI) and experiencing some side effects, such as black stools, which can be alarming. Black stools can indicate bleeding in the upper gastrointestinal tract, but since this resolved after stopping the medication, it may not be a cause for concern. However, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider about any unusual symptoms.
The presence of a fibroid (myoma) measuring five centimeters can also raise concerns during pregnancy. Generally, fibroids can affect pregnancy in various ways, including potential complications such as pain, bleeding, or even preterm labor, depending on their size and location. However, many women with fibroids have healthy pregnancies. Your doctor’s recommendation to avoid surgery at this stage is common, as the risks often outweigh the benefits during early pregnancy. It is essential to follow your doctor's advice and monitor your condition closely.
The occurrence of pink or brown discharge can be concerning, but it is not uncommon in early pregnancy. This can be due to several factors, including implantation bleeding or irritation of the cervix. However, if you experience heavy bleeding or severe pain, you should seek immediate medical attention.
As for your family’s concerns about the health of your baby, it is natural for loved ones to worry, especially when faced with complications. However, stress and anxiety can also impact your health and, consequently, your baby's health. It is essential to maintain a calm and supportive environment. Regular prenatal check-ups are vital to monitor your baby's development and address any potential issues early on.
In terms of lifestyle, maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and avoiding stress are crucial during this period. If you are experiencing anxiety about your pregnancy, consider discussing it with your healthcare provider, who may recommend counseling or support groups.
Regarding the medications you have taken, it is essential to inform your healthcare provider about all medications, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, to ensure they are safe during pregnancy. Some medications can have adverse effects on fetal development, especially in the first trimester.
In conclusion, while there are some concerns regarding your health and the presence of a fibroid, many women have successful pregnancies despite similar challenges. Regular monitoring and communication with your healthcare provider are key to ensuring the health of both you and your baby. If you have any further concerns or experience any alarming symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor for guidance. Your health and the health of your baby are paramount, and taking proactive steps will help you navigate this journey more smoothly.
