There is a popping sound in my left ear when I swallow?

Hello, doctor.
Recently, I have noticed a popping sound in my left ear that occurs when I swallow saliva, lasting about 0.x to 1 second.
I haven't had a cold lately, but I do have a long-standing allergy that causes nasal congestion and mucus upon waking up.
About 1 to 2 months ago, I experienced a sensation of fullness in my left ear when yawning, similar to the feeling of water getting into my ear while showering.
I noticed this more often after showering, but I haven't paid much attention to it since then.
I'm wondering if this popping sound is related to the previous sensation.
Thank you, doctor.

Hello, if the popping sound persists without improvement, it is recommended to seek medical attention to check for any small earwax blockage on the eardrum or any abnormalities in the Eustachian tube function.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

The clicking sound you are experiencing in your left ear when swallowing could be attributed to several factors, primarily involving the Eustachian tube and the middle ear. The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear to the back of the throat and helps equalize pressure in the ear. When you swallow, yawn, or chew, the Eustachian tube opens to allow air to flow into the middle ear, which can sometimes create a clicking or popping sound.
In your case, the clicking sound may be related to the following:
1. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: Given your history of allergies and nasal congestion, it is possible that your Eustachian tube is not functioning optimally. Allergies can lead to inflammation and swelling of the nasal passages, which may affect the Eustachian tube's ability to open properly. This can result in a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear and may cause sounds like clicking or popping when swallowing.

2. Middle Ear Pressure Changes: When you swallow, the pressure in the middle ear should equalize with the external environment. If there is a blockage or dysfunction in the Eustachian tube, this pressure equalization may not occur smoothly, leading to abnormal sounds.

3. Earwax Buildup: Although you did not mention any symptoms of earwax blockage, it is worth considering that a buildup of earwax can sometimes cause sounds in the ear, especially if it is pressing against the eardrum.

4. Muscle Spasms: The muscles around the Eustachian tube can sometimes spasm, leading to sounds that may be perceived as clicking or popping. This can occur in response to changes in pressure or other stimuli.

5. Acoustic Reflex: The ear has a protective mechanism known as the acoustic reflex, which involves the contraction of muscles in the middle ear in response to loud sounds. This reflex can sometimes cause sensations or sounds in the ear.

Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, including checking for any signs of Eustachian tube dysfunction, fluid in the middle ear, or other potential issues. They may also recommend treatments such as nasal decongestants, nasal corticosteroids, or other interventions to help alleviate your symptoms.

In the meantime, here are some self-care measures you can consider:
- Nasal Irrigation: Using a saline nasal spray or performing nasal irrigation can help clear mucus and reduce inflammation in the nasal passages, potentially improving Eustachian tube function.

- Yawning or Swallowing: These actions can help open the Eustachian tube and equalize pressure in the ear. You can also try the Valsalva maneuver (gently blowing while pinching your nose) to help equalize ear pressure.

- Avoiding Allergens: If you have known allergies, try to minimize exposure to allergens that may be contributing to your nasal congestion.

In summary, the clicking sound in your left ear when swallowing is likely related to Eustachian tube dysfunction, possibly exacerbated by your allergies. Consulting with an ENT specialist will provide you with a clearer diagnosis and appropriate treatment options.
