Menstrual issues
Hello, doctor.
I had my period on September 28th, and due to bleeding caused by uterine fibroids, the bleeding stopped on October 8th.
The doctor mentioned that the delayed bleeding doesn't count as a period.
How should I calculate my next period since it hasn't arrived yet? Is there a possibility that I could be pregnant, or should I wait until November 8th? Thank you!
Ni, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/11/02

1.
Prolonged menstrual periods can have many possible causes, including irregular menstruation, uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, and uterine inflammation.
2.
If the prolonged menstrual period is due to uterine fibroids or adenomyosis, the timing of the next menstrual period is usually not significantly different from the expected time.
However, if it is due to irregular menstruation or inflammation, there may be a larger discrepancy in the timing of the next period.
3.
If there are concerns about pregnancy, it is advisable to monitor the timing of the next menstrual period.
If it is delayed beyond the expected time, it is recommended to take a pregnancy test.
Respectfully, Dr.

When it comes to understanding menstrual irregularities and pregnancy concerns, especially in the context of a recent history of uterine fibroids and abnormal bleeding, it is essential to consider several factors that can influence both menstrual cycles and the possibility of pregnancy.
Firstly, menstrual cycles can be affected by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, changes in weight, and underlying medical conditions such as uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can lead to heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, and sometimes irregular cycles. If you experienced bleeding due to fibroids, as mentioned in your case, it is crucial to understand that this bleeding may not be considered a regular menstrual period. Your doctor indicated that the bleeding you experienced on October 8th should not be counted as a menstrual period, which means that your cycle may be disrupted.
Typically, a menstrual cycle is counted from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. If your last "normal" menstrual period was on September 28th, and you had abnormal bleeding on October 8th, you would not count that as a new cycle. Therefore, if you are trying to determine when your next period is due, you would generally expect it to occur approximately 28 days after September 28th, which would be around October 26th. However, given the irregularities caused by the fibroids, your cycle may not follow this pattern.
Regarding the possibility of pregnancy, if you had unprotected intercourse during your fertile window (which typically occurs around ovulation, about 14 days before your next expected period), there is a chance of conception. If you suspect you might be pregnant, it is advisable to take a home pregnancy test if your period does not arrive by the expected date. Home pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period, as they detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining.
If you find yourself in a situation where your period is significantly delayed, and you have a negative pregnancy test, it may be worth consulting your healthcare provider. They can perform further evaluations to determine the cause of the irregularities, which may include blood tests to check hormone levels or imaging studies to assess the status of the fibroids.
In summary, given your history of uterine fibroids and the recent abnormal bleeding, it is essential to monitor your menstrual cycle closely. If your period does not arrive as expected, consider taking a pregnancy test and consulting your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation, ensuring that any underlying issues are addressed and that you receive appropriate care.
