Persistent Blood in Right Nostril: Possible Causes and Concerns - Otolaryngology

There is continuous bleeding from the right nostril after inserting tissue into it?

Hello Doctor: For the past six months, I have been feeling discomfort in my right nasal cavity, and I keep sensing an unusual smell.
When I insert a tissue into my right nostril, there is blood (but it doesn't flow like a typical nosebleed).
Looking in the mirror, I noticed that the inner walls of my nasal cavity appear red, resembling the color of blood vessels.
The amount of blood has remained consistent over the past six months, with no increase.
I am 22 years old, do not smoke, live a normal life, and have no family history of nasal cancer...
but I am hesitant to see a doctor.
Could you please tell me what disease this might be? Is it possible that it could be nasal cancer? Thank you, Doctor!

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello: Nosebleeds are mostly caused by superficial microvessels in the anterior part of the nose that are prone to rupture and bleed.
If you experience frequent nosebleeds, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Cheng Jue-Yi, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info

Persistent blood in the right nostril can be concerning, especially when it has persisted for an extended period. Based on your description, there are several possible causes for the symptoms you are experiencing, and it is essential to consider them carefully.

1. Nasal Irritation or Inflammation: One of the most common causes of blood in the nasal cavity is irritation or inflammation of the nasal mucosa. This can occur due to various factors, including allergies, dry air, or frequent nose blowing. If the nasal passages are dry, the blood vessels can become fragile and break, leading to minor bleeding.

2. Nasal Polyps: These are non-cancerous growths that can develop in the nasal passages or sinuses. They can cause discomfort and may lead to bleeding if they become irritated or inflamed.

3. Sinusitis: Chronic sinusitis, which is an inflammation of the sinuses, can also lead to nasal bleeding. This condition can be associated with other symptoms such as facial pain, pressure, and nasal congestion.

4. Vascular Malformations: In some cases, there may be vascular malformations or abnormal blood vessels in the nasal cavity that can lead to persistent bleeding. These conditions may require further evaluation by a specialist.

5. Tumors: While it is less common, persistent bleeding from the nose can be a sign of a more serious condition, such as a nasal tumor, including nasal cancer. However, given your age and the absence of a family history of nasal cancer, this is less likely but should not be ruled out.

6. Other Causes: Other potential causes could include infections, foreign bodies lodged in the nasal cavity, or even systemic conditions that affect blood clotting.

Given that you have been experiencing this issue for over six months, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough examination, which may include a nasal endoscopy, imaging studies, or other diagnostic tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
It is understandable to feel apprehensive about visiting a doctor, but it is essential for your health. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent potential complications and provide peace of mind. If you are concerned about the possibility of nasal cancer, discussing your symptoms openly with a healthcare provider can help address your fears and lead to appropriate care.

In conclusion, while there are several benign explanations for your symptoms, it is vital to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. Ignoring persistent symptoms can lead to complications, so taking action is the best course of action for your health and well-being.
