Irregular menstruation, recently experiencing abdominal discomfort and pain?

Hello, I have irregular menstruation, usually my period comes every three months.
After my last period on September 28, I experienced some discomfort in my abdomen, especially at night when I feel very uncomfortable and a bit nauseous, but I can't vomit.
I bought a pregnancy test, but it only showed one line.
I would like to know if this means I cannot get pregnant?

Hsu Hui-Ling, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/11/05

Hello, if your menstrual cycle is irregular and occurs every 35 days or longer, it is advisable to visit a clinic for an evaluation of the underlying causes.
Thank you.

Irregular periods and abdominal pain can be concerning, especially after significant life changes such as marriage. Your situation involves a few important aspects that need to be addressed.

Firstly, irregular menstrual cycles can be caused by a variety of factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, changes in weight, and lifestyle factors. After marriage, many women experience changes in their emotional and physical states, which can affect their menstrual cycles. The stress of new responsibilities and changes in routine can contribute to irregularities. Additionally, if you have a history of irregular periods, this may simply be a continuation of that pattern.

The abdominal pain you are experiencing could be related to several potential causes. It is not uncommon for women to experience discomfort due to ovulation, especially if your cycles are irregular. This pain, often referred to as mittelschmerz, occurs when an egg is released from the ovary and can cause discomfort on one side of the abdomen. However, given that you mentioned feeling nauseous and having persistent discomfort, it is essential to consider other possibilities as well.

One potential cause of your symptoms could be related to gastrointestinal issues, such as indigestion or gastritis, which can cause abdominal discomfort and nausea. Stress and anxiety can also exacerbate these symptoms, leading to a feeling of discomfort in the stomach area.
Another important aspect to consider is the possibility of pregnancy. While you mentioned that a home pregnancy test returned negative, it is important to note that these tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period. If your cycles are irregular, it may be challenging to determine the right time to test. If you suspect you might be pregnant, consider retesting a few days later or consulting with a healthcare provider for a blood test, which can provide more accurate results.

In terms of your concern about not being able to conceive, it is essential to understand that irregular periods can sometimes indicate issues with ovulation. If you are not ovulating regularly, it may affect your ability to conceive. However, many women with irregular cycles can still become pregnant. If you are actively trying to conceive and have concerns, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider or a fertility specialist who can evaluate your situation more thoroughly.

To address your abdominal pain, consider keeping a symptom diary to track when the pain occurs, its intensity, and any associated symptoms. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue. Additionally, over-the-counter pain relief medications may help alleviate discomfort, but it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before taking any medication, especially if you suspect pregnancy.

In summary, while irregular periods and abdominal pain can be concerning, they are not uncommon, especially after significant life changes. It is crucial to monitor your symptoms, consider retesting for pregnancy if necessary, and consult with a healthcare provider for a comprehensive evaluation. They can help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms and provide appropriate guidance and treatment options. Remember, your health and well-being are paramount, and seeking professional advice is always a wise step.
