Painless watery stools

Hello doctor, this week I have been experiencing watery stools every time I have a bowel movement, which has not happened before.
I have been going 2 to 3 times a day, but I do not feel any abdominal pain; I only have a sensation of swelling around the anus.
I have been drinking Quaker Smooth High Calcium Milk Powder, and I did not have this issue before, but it started this week.
Doctor, what could be wrong with me?

Xiao Tian, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/11/08

Painless watery diarrhea can be concerning, especially when it occurs suddenly and frequently, as you described. There are several potential causes for this condition, and understanding them can help determine the best course of action.

Firstly, it's important to note that diarrhea can be classified into different types based on its duration and underlying causes. In your case, since you mentioned that the diarrhea is painless and accompanied by a feeling of swelling around the anus, it may suggest a few possibilities.

1. Dietary Factors: You mentioned consuming a specific product, Quaker Smooth High Calcium Milk Powder, which you have not had issues with in the past. It's possible that your body has developed a sensitivity or intolerance to one of the ingredients in this product, leading to gastrointestinal upset. Lactose intolerance, for example, can cause diarrhea in individuals who are unable to properly digest lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products. If you suspect this might be the case, consider eliminating the product from your diet for a few days to see if your symptoms improve.

2. Infections: While you noted that there is no pain associated with your diarrhea, infections can still be a possibility. Viral gastroenteritis, commonly known as the stomach flu, can cause watery diarrhea without significant abdominal pain. Bacterial infections, such as those caused by E. coli or Salmonella, can also lead to similar symptoms. If you have been exposed to contaminated food or water, this could be a potential cause.

3. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): IBS is a functional gastrointestinal disorder that can cause a variety of symptoms, including diarrhea. It is often triggered by stress, dietary changes, or certain foods. If you have a history of gastrointestinal issues or if you have been under stress recently, this could be a contributing factor.

4. Medications or Supplements: If you have recently started any new medications or supplements, these could also be responsible for your symptoms. Some medications can disrupt normal bowel function, leading to diarrhea.

5. Other Medical Conditions: Conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), celiac disease, or other gastrointestinal disorders can also present with diarrhea. While these conditions often have additional symptoms, they can sometimes manifest primarily as diarrhea.

Given that your diarrhea has persisted for a week, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend stool tests to check for infections, as well as blood tests to rule out other underlying conditions. Additionally, keeping a food diary to track what you eat and any symptoms that arise can be helpful for your doctor in determining the cause.

In the meantime, it is essential to stay hydrated, as diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Drinking plenty of fluids, such as water or electrolyte solutions, is crucial. Avoiding dairy products, high-fiber foods, and fatty or spicy foods may also help alleviate symptoms until you can see a doctor.

In summary, while painless watery diarrhea can be caused by various factors, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and seek medical advice if they persist or worsen. A healthcare provider can help identify the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment to restore your digestive health.
