There are rashes with hair growth in the genital area?
Hello, around mid-August, I noticed a small red rash in the hair-bearing area of my genital region.
At first, I didn't pay much attention to it, but it started to become increasingly itchy, and I kept scratching it.
Unfortunately, it got worse and has now spread into a larger area, but there are no blisters; however, when I scratch it, there is a fluid similar to tissue fluid.
Could this be a type of eczema?

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology
Eczema, fungal infections, and parasitic infections are all possible.
Without actually seeing the lesions, it is not possible to confirm the diagnosis.
It is recommended to have a dermatologist evaluate the condition for accurate assessment.

More Info
When it comes to red bumps and itching in the pubic area, there are several potential causes that could be at play, including eczema, but also other dermatological conditions. Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is characterized by red, itchy patches of skin that can become inflamed and may ooze fluid if scratched excessively. However, the symptoms you describe could also be indicative of other conditions such as contact dermatitis, folliculitis, or even a fungal infection.
Understanding Eczema and Other Conditions
1. Eczema: This is a chronic skin condition that often presents as red, itchy patches. It can be triggered by various factors, including allergens, irritants, stress, and changes in temperature or humidity. In the pubic area, eczema can occur due to friction from clothing, moisture, or irritants from soaps and detergents. The presence of oozing fluid suggests that the skin may be damaged from scratching, which can lead to secondary infections.
2. Contact Dermatitis: This condition occurs when the skin reacts to a substance that it has come into contact with, such as soaps, lotions, or even certain fabrics. If you have recently changed any personal care products or laundry detergents, this could be a possible cause of your symptoms.
3. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by bacterial or fungal infections. It can present as red bumps or pustules around hair follicles, and it can be itchy. This condition can occur in areas where hair is present, including the pubic region.
4. Fungal Infections: Conditions like tinea cruris (jock itch) can cause red, itchy rashes in the groin area. These infections thrive in warm, moist environments and can lead to red, scaly patches that may ooze if scratched.
Diagnosis and Treatment
To determine the exact cause of your symptoms, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a dermatologist. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, take a skin scraping or biopsy to identify any underlying infections or conditions.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations:
- Avoid Scratching: While it may be tempting, scratching can worsen the condition and lead to secondary infections. Try to keep the area clean and dry.
- Use Gentle Cleansers: Opt for mild, fragrance-free soaps and avoid any products that may irritate the skin.
- Moisturize: If eczema is suspected, applying a fragrance-free moisturizer can help soothe the skin and reduce itching.
- Over-the-Counter Treatments: Hydrocortisone cream can help reduce inflammation and itching. However, it should be used sparingly and not for prolonged periods without medical advice.
- Avoid Tight Clothing: Loose-fitting clothing can help reduce friction and irritation in the affected area.
When to Seek Medical Attention
If your symptoms persist, worsen, or are accompanied by other signs such as fever, increased redness, or pus, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare provider can offer a definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan tailored to your specific condition.
In summary, while eczema is a possibility, other conditions could also be responsible for your symptoms. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is the best way to ensure you receive the correct diagnosis and treatment.
