Is my period about to start?

Hello, doctor.
My last menstrual period started on October 13th.
This month, starting from the 4th, I've occasionally noticed light pink discharge after using the restroom, which I initially thought was the start of my period, but it hasn't come.
For the past few days, after sexual intercourse, I've also noticed light red discharge, but again, my period hasn't started.
Could this indicate that my menstruation is approaching?

Ru, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/11/09

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

The response to the abnormal light bleeding may include possible causes such as irregular menstruation, inflammation, polyps, pregnancy, or tumors.
Please seek medical evaluation.
Sincerely, Dr.
Lyu Li-Cheng, Taoyuan Hospital.

When it comes to understanding the early signs and symptoms of an impending menstrual period, it’s important to recognize that every woman's body is unique, and menstrual cycles can vary significantly from one individual to another. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing some premenstrual symptoms that could indicate that your period is approaching.

Typically, a menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but it can range from 21 to 35 days in adults. The signs that your period may be coming can include a variety of physical and emotional symptoms. Some common early signs include:
1. Spotting or Light Bleeding: The light pink discharge you mentioned could be a sign of implantation bleeding if you are pregnant, or it could simply be spotting that occurs before your period starts. Spotting can happen a few days to a week before your actual menstrual flow begins.

2. Breast Tenderness: Many women experience breast tenderness or swelling in the days leading up to their period due to hormonal changes.

3. Cramps: Some women may feel mild cramping in their lower abdomen as their body prepares for menstruation.

4. Mood Swings: Hormonal fluctuations can lead to mood changes, irritability, or increased emotional sensitivity.

5. Bloating: You might notice that your abdomen feels fuller or more bloated as your period approaches.

6. Fatigue: Some women report feeling more tired or fatigued in the days leading up to their period.

Given that you experienced light pink discharge and some light bleeding after sexual activity, it could be a sign that your period is on its way. However, it’s also important to consider other factors that could influence your menstrual cycle, such as stress, changes in weight, exercise habits, or hormonal imbalances.

If your symptoms persist or if you experience any unusual changes in your menstrual cycle, such as significantly heavier bleeding, severe pain, or prolonged irregularities, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination and possibly blood tests or imaging studies, to rule out any underlying conditions.

In summary, while the symptoms you are experiencing may indicate that your period is approaching, it’s essential to monitor your body and consult with a healthcare professional if you have concerns. Keeping track of your menstrual cycle and any accompanying symptoms can also provide valuable information to your healthcare provider should you need to seek advice in the future.
