Menstrual delay but negative pregnancy test?
Hello doctor, my last menstrual period started on October 6 and ended on October 11.
My usual cycle is around 29 to 28 days.
After my period ended, I had sexual intercourse, but my period has not arrived by November 11, which is 6 days late.
I took a pregnancy test, but the result showed one line, and my basal body temperature has slightly increased to 37 degrees Celsius.
I have not taken any medication during this time.
Is it possible that I am pregnant?
Tong Tong, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/11/11
Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Having sexual intercourse without contraception can lead to the possibility of pregnancy.
It is recommended to wait at least 18 days after the last sexual encounter for a more accurate pregnancy test.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
When experiencing a delayed period accompanied by a negative pregnancy test, it can be concerning and confusing. Based on the information provided, you last had your menstrual period from October 6 to October 11, and your typical cycle length is around 28 to 29 days. Since your period was expected around November 11 and is now delayed by six days, it is understandable that you are worried about the possibility of pregnancy.
Firstly, it is important to note that a negative pregnancy test, especially if taken after a missed period, typically indicates that you are not pregnant. Most home pregnancy tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. For the most accurate results, it is recommended to take the test at least one week after a missed period. If you tested too early, it might not have detected the hormone yet, leading to a false negative.
In your case, since you mentioned that your temperature has slightly increased to 37 degrees Celsius, it could be a sign of ovulation or other hormonal changes. However, a slight increase in basal body temperature alone is not a definitive indicator of pregnancy. Other factors can also cause a delay in your menstrual cycle, including:
1. Stress: High levels of stress, especially during significant life events like exams or work pressures, can disrupt your hormonal balance, leading to delayed or missed periods.
2. Lifestyle Changes: Changes in your routine, such as sleep patterns, diet, or exercise, can also affect your menstrual cycle. For instance, if you have been under stress or have altered your sleep schedule, this could be a contributing factor.
3. Hormonal Imbalance: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders can lead to irregular menstrual cycles. If you have a history of irregular periods, this might be a consideration.
4. Weight Fluctuations: Significant weight loss or gain can impact your menstrual cycle. If you have experienced any changes in your weight recently, this could be a factor.
5. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, including ovarian cysts or other reproductive health issues, can cause changes in your menstrual cycle.
Given that you have already taken a pregnancy test and it was negative, it may be advisable to wait a few more days and, if your period does not arrive, consider taking another test. If your period remains absent after two weeks, or if you experience any unusual symptoms (such as severe pain, heavy bleeding, or other concerning signs), it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may recommend additional testing or examinations to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while the possibility of pregnancy cannot be entirely ruled out, the negative test result and the factors mentioned suggest that there may be other reasons for your delayed period. Monitoring your symptoms and consulting with a healthcare professional if necessary will help clarify your situation and ensure your reproductive health is managed appropriately.
