Red eyes upon waking up?

Hello, doctor.
My eyes are often red.
I visited a doctor who prescribed me Morcasin and Viscone.
After using them, my eyes improved for a short time, but then they became red again.
The doctor might have thought it was not serious this time and only gave me the latter to use.
However, after using it, my eyes became red again shortly after.
I often notice that when I wake up in the morning, there is a lot of eye discharge, and sometimes my eyes feel uncomfortable upon waking.
When I apply eye drops, my eyes immediately turn completely red.
Should I consider visiting another clinic? Or could this be an allergy issue? Thank you.

Experiencing red eyes upon waking can be a common issue, and it can stem from various causes. Based on your description, it seems that you have been dealing with this problem for some time, and despite receiving treatment, the redness persists. Let’s explore some potential reasons for your symptoms and discuss possible solutions.

Possible Causes of Red Eyes in the Morning
1. Dry Eyes: One of the most common causes of red eyes is dryness. When you sleep, your eyes may not produce enough tears, leading to dryness and irritation. This can result in redness upon waking. If you have a history of dry eyes, this could be a significant factor.

2. Allergies: Allergic reactions can cause redness and irritation in the eyes. Common allergens include dust mites, pollen, pet dander, and mold. If you are allergic to something in your environment, it could lead to red eyes, especially if you sleep in a room where these allergens are present.

3. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): This condition can be caused by infections (viral or bacterial) or allergies. Symptoms include redness, discharge, and discomfort. If you notice increased discharge (eye mucus) upon waking, this could indicate conjunctivitis.

4. Contact Lens Use: If you wear contact lenses, especially overnight, this can lead to irritation and redness. Sleeping in contacts can reduce oxygen flow to the cornea, causing inflammation and redness.

5. Environmental Factors: Factors such as dry air, smoke, or exposure to screens before bed can contribute to eye irritation. If your sleeping environment is dry or if you are exposed to irritants, this could exacerbate your symptoms.

6. Underlying Medical Conditions: Conditions such as blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids), meibomian gland dysfunction, or even systemic issues can lead to chronic red eyes.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Artificial Tears: Using preservative-free artificial tears before bed and upon waking can help keep your eyes moist and reduce redness. This is particularly important if you have dry eyes.

2. Allergy Management: If allergies are suspected, consider using antihistamine eye drops or oral antihistamines. Keeping your sleeping area clean and free of allergens can also help.

3. Avoid Contact Lenses Overnight: If you wear contact lenses, consider switching to daily disposables or avoid wearing them overnight to reduce irritation.

4. Consult an Eye Specialist: Since you have already seen a doctor and received treatment, it may be beneficial to seek a second opinion from an ophthalmologist who specializes in ocular surface diseases. They can provide a more thorough examination and possibly identify underlying issues that may have been overlooked.

5. Maintain a Healthy Environment: Ensure that your sleeping area is well-ventilated and not overly dry. Using a humidifier can help maintain moisture in the air, which may alleviate dryness in your eyes.

6. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, noting when they occur and any potential triggers. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue.

In conclusion, while red eyes upon waking can be a nuisance, understanding the underlying causes can help you find effective solutions. If your symptoms persist despite trying these strategies, it is advisable to consult with an eye care professional for a comprehensive evaluation and tailored treatment plan. Your eye health is important, and addressing these concerns early can prevent further complications.
