Septoplasty: Recovery and Stitch Care After Surgery - Otolaryngology

Septoplasty

Hello, doctor.
I had my septoplasty done at the end of last month.
I haven't had time to return for a follow-up appointment, so I wanted to ask you about my situation.
The stitches in my nose haven't come out yet, and the area is still painful.
Should I let them fall out on their own, or do I need to go to the hospital to have them removed? Is it because they haven't scabbed over yet, or is there another reason? Thank you :)

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello, the septoplasty surgery uses absorbable sutures, which will naturally dissolve over time.
However, if the absorption is slow or if there is movement, it may cause pain.
It is recommended to return to the outpatient clinic for suture removal if necessary.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.
Jue-Yi Cheng, Director of the Department of Otolaryngology, Taoyuan General Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting a deviated septum, which is the cartilage and bone that divides the nasal cavity into two nostrils. This surgery can significantly improve breathing, reduce nasal obstruction, and alleviate symptoms associated with sinusitis. Recovery from septoplasty typically involves managing pain, swelling, and ensuring proper care of the surgical site, including the stitches.

Recovery Process:
After septoplasty, patients can expect some discomfort, swelling, and nasal congestion. These symptoms are normal and usually subside within a few days to a week. Pain management is crucial during this period, and your doctor may prescribe pain relievers or recommend over-the-counter medications. It's essential to follow your physician's instructions regarding medication and activity levels during recovery.

Stitch Care:
Regarding your stitches, it is common for absorbable sutures to be used in septoplasty. These sutures typically dissolve on their own within a few weeks. However, if non-absorbable sutures were used, they would need to be removed by your healthcare provider. If your stitches are still intact and causing pain, it could be due to irritation or inflammation in the area.
It is generally advisable to avoid manipulating or pulling at the stitches, as this can lead to complications such as infection or delayed healing. If the stitches are still present after a couple of weeks and you are experiencing significant pain, it would be prudent to contact your surgeon's office for guidance. They may recommend an appointment to assess the surgical site and determine whether the stitches need to be removed or if they are healing appropriately.

When to Seek Medical Attention:
You should seek medical attention if you experience any of the following:
- Increased pain that is not relieved by prescribed medications.

- Signs of infection, such as fever, increased redness, swelling, or discharge from the surgical site.

- Difficulty breathing or significant nasal obstruction that worsens.

- Any unusual symptoms that concern you.

Conclusion:
In summary, while some discomfort and pain are expected after septoplasty, it is crucial to monitor your recovery closely. If your stitches have not dissolved and are causing persistent pain, it is advisable to consult your surgeon. They will provide the best course of action, whether that involves removing the stitches or offering additional care instructions. Remember, your recovery is a priority, and maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider is key to a successful outcome.
