Inquire about symptoms and provide recommendations?
Hello, I would like to inquire about my condition.
I had chickenpox on November 10, 2015, and it is almost resolved now.
However, on November 9, I experienced a headache, dizziness, neck stiffness, light sensitivity, and sound sensitivity after waking up from a nap.
I also had symptoms of fever, sweating, and nausea.
These symptoms improved by the evening of November 9, but on November 10, they became more severe and lasted longer, and my condition worsened.
I am unsure what the issue might be and would appreciate any advice from a physician.
Thank you.
Zhi Kai, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/11/19

Dear Zhikai, if you notice any stiffness in the neck, sensitivity to light, or sensitivity to sound, please go to the emergency department immediately for evaluation to rule out a central nervous system infection.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns. Based on the symptoms you've described, it sounds like you are experiencing a combination of neurological and possibly viral-related issues following your recent bout with chickenpox (varicella).
Firstly, it's important to recognize that chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which can lead to various complications, especially if the infection is severe or if the individual has a weakened immune system. The symptoms you are experiencing—headache, dizziness, neck stiffness, light sensitivity, and nausea—could potentially indicate a few different conditions, including viral meningitis or post-viral syndrome.
1. Viral Meningitis: This is an inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, often caused by viral infections. Symptoms can include severe headache, fever, neck stiffness, sensitivity to light, and nausea. Given that you have neck stiffness and light sensitivity, it would be prudent to seek medical attention to rule out this condition.
2. Post-Viral Syndrome: After a viral infection, some individuals may experience lingering symptoms such as fatigue, headaches, and dizziness. This can occur after infections like chickenpox, and while it typically resolves over time, it can be distressing.
3. Other Considerations: It's also worth considering other potential causes for your symptoms, such as dehydration, stress, or even a migraine. The fact that your symptoms worsened after a nap could suggest a migraine or tension headache, particularly if you have a history of headaches.
Given the severity and combination of your symptoms, I recommend the following steps:
- Seek Medical Attention: It’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional as soon as possible. They may perform a physical examination, take a detailed medical history, and possibly order tests such as blood tests or a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) to check for meningitis.
- Stay Hydrated: Ensure you are drinking plenty of fluids, as dehydration can exacerbate headaches and dizziness.
- Rest: While it’s important to stay active, your body may need more rest to recover from the viral infection. Listen to your body and allow yourself time to heal.
- Manage Symptoms: Over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help alleviate headache and fever, but consult with a healthcare provider before taking any medication, especially if you have other underlying health conditions.
- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, including when they occur and their severity. This information can be very helpful for your healthcare provider in diagnosing your condition.
In conclusion, while it’s understandable to feel anxious about your symptoms, seeking professional medical advice is the best course of action. Early intervention can lead to better outcomes, especially if there is an underlying condition that needs to be addressed. Take care, and I hope you feel better soon!
