Shoulder pain?
I came on October 11th last month, but this month I haven't had my period until a little bit came last night and then seemed to stop again.
What could this situation be? Also, I occasionally have abdominal pain and my lower back feels sore! Is my period about to start or is it something else???
Mi, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/11/24

Understanding shoulder pain and menstrual irregularities can be complex, as both issues may stem from various underlying causes. In your case, the irregularity in your menstrual cycle, combined with abdominal pain and lower back discomfort, could be influenced by several factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, or even physical strain.
Firstly, let's address the menstrual irregularities. A missed period or changes in your menstrual cycle can occur for a variety of reasons. Common causes include:
1. Hormonal Imbalances: Hormones regulate the menstrual cycle, and any imbalance can lead to irregularities. Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders can affect hormone levels.
2. Stress: High levels of stress can impact your body’s hormonal balance, potentially leading to missed periods or changes in flow.
3. Physical Activity: Intense exercise or changes in weight can also affect your menstrual cycle. If you've recently increased your physical activity or experienced significant weight loss or gain, this could be a factor.
4. Health Conditions: Conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids can cause pain and irregularities in menstrual cycles. If you experience severe pain or other concerning symptoms, it’s essential to consult a healthcare provider.
Regarding your shoulder pain, it’s important to consider whether there might be a connection between the two issues. Shoulder pain can arise from various causes, including:
1. Musculoskeletal Injuries: If you have recently engaged in activities that strain your shoulder, such as lifting heavy objects or repetitive motions, this could lead to pain.
2. Referred Pain: Sometimes, pain in one area of the body can be felt in another. For instance, issues with the neck or upper back can manifest as shoulder pain.
3. Inflammatory Conditions: Conditions like tendinitis or bursitis can cause shoulder pain and may be exacerbated by physical activity or stress.
4. Nerve Impingement: If a nerve in the neck is compressed, it can lead to pain radiating into the shoulder.
Given your symptoms of abdominal pain and lower back discomfort, it’s crucial to monitor your condition closely. If the abdominal pain is severe or persistent, or if you experience any unusual symptoms such as heavy bleeding, fever, or dizziness, you should seek medical attention promptly.
In the meantime, consider the following self-care measures:
- Pain Relief: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate discomfort. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication.
- Heat Therapy: Applying a heating pad to the lower abdomen or back may help relieve pain and discomfort.
- Rest: Ensure you are getting adequate rest and managing stress levels, as both can significantly impact your overall health and menstrual cycle.
- Hydration and Nutrition: Maintaining a balanced diet and staying hydrated can support your body’s overall function and may help regulate your menstrual cycle.
If your symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They may recommend blood tests to check hormone levels, imaging studies for shoulder pain, or other diagnostic tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In summary, while shoulder pain and menstrual irregularities may seem unrelated, they can both be influenced by similar factors such as stress and hormonal changes. Monitoring your symptoms and seeking medical advice when necessary will be crucial in managing your health effectively.
