The issue of medication for a feeling of something stuck in the throat?
Hello, doctor.
A few months ago, I felt like there was something foreign in my throat, so I went to an ENT specialist for an examination.
The doctor didn't explain the cause to me after the examination, but prescribed cefazolin and advised me to drink plenty of water and avoid spicy foods.
Does this mean I have chronic pharyngitis?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, the most common condition is still chronic pharyngitis.
If examinations show no abnormalities, it is advisable to drink plenty of water and reduce the intake of irritating foods.
However, if there is accompanying pain or difficulty swallowing, it is necessary to seek medical attention for further evaluation.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Throat discomfort can be a common symptom that many people experience, and it can stem from various causes, including infections, allergies, irritants, or chronic conditions. In your case, the sensation of having a foreign body in your throat, along with the treatment prescribed by your ENT specialist, raises some important considerations regarding chronic pharyngitis.
Chronic pharyngitis is characterized by persistent inflammation of the pharynx, which can lead to symptoms such as a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and the sensation of a lump or foreign body in the throat. This condition can be caused by several factors, including prolonged exposure to irritants (like smoke or pollution), chronic sinusitis, allergies, or even gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
The fact that your doctor prescribed cefazolin, an antibiotic, suggests that there may have been a suspicion of a bacterial infection contributing to your throat discomfort. However, it's important to note that not all cases of throat discomfort are due to bacterial infections. In many instances, throat discomfort can be viral in nature, which would not respond to antibiotics. The recommendation to drink plenty of fluids and avoid spicy foods is a common approach to soothe throat irritation, regardless of the underlying cause.
If your symptoms persist despite treatment, it may be indicative of chronic pharyngitis or another underlying condition. Chronic pharyngitis can sometimes be difficult to diagnose definitively, as it often overlaps with other conditions. Therefore, if you continue to experience discomfort, it would be advisable to follow up with your ENT specialist for further evaluation. This may include additional tests, such as a laryngoscopy, to visualize the throat and identify any abnormalities.
In summary, while your symptoms could align with chronic pharyngitis, the definitive diagnosis would depend on a thorough examination and possibly further testing. If you have ongoing discomfort, it is important to seek further medical advice to ensure that any underlying issues are addressed appropriately. Chronic conditions often require a comprehensive management plan, which may include lifestyle modifications, medications, or even referral to a specialist for more targeted treatment.
