Abdominal pain
Hello doctor, I have been experiencing pain in my lower left and lower right abdomen frequently.
I have bowel movements 2 to 3 times a day, and they are often loose and fragmented.
The pain in my lower left and lower right abdomen is quite severe during bowel movements and has been ongoing for two to three months.
What could this problem be? Thank you.

Abdominal pain can be a complex issue with various underlying causes, especially when it persists for an extended period, as in your case. The symptoms you describe—pain in the left and right lower abdomen, along with frequent, unformed stools—suggest a few potential gastrointestinal conditions that warrant further investigation.
One of the most common causes of lower abdominal pain and altered bowel habits is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits, including diarrhea and constipation. The pain often correlates with bowel movements and can be relieved after defecation. Stress and anxiety can exacerbate IBS symptoms, so it’s essential to consider any psychological factors that may be contributing to your discomfort.
Another possibility is inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. These conditions can cause chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, leading to symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea (which may be bloody), weight loss, and fatigue. Given the duration of your symptoms, it would be prudent to discuss the possibility of IBD with your healthcare provider, especially if you experience any additional symptoms like fever or unexplained weight loss.
Diverticulitis is another condition that could explain your symptoms, particularly if you have a history of diverticular disease. This occurs when small pouches (diverticula) in the colon become inflamed or infected, leading to pain, often on the left side of the abdomen, along with changes in bowel habits.
Additionally, gastroenteritis or infections can lead to abdominal pain and diarrhea. If you have had any recent infections or changes in diet, this could also be a contributing factor.
Given your symptoms have persisted for two to three months, it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider may recommend several diagnostic tests, including blood tests, stool tests, and imaging studies like an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan, to rule out serious conditions and confirm a diagnosis.
In the meantime, managing your diet can help alleviate some symptoms. Consider keeping a food diary to identify any potential triggers, such as dairy, gluten, or high-fat foods. Eating smaller, more frequent meals and staying hydrated can also be beneficial. Additionally, incorporating stress management techniques, such as mindfulness or cognitive-behavioral therapy, may help if anxiety is a contributing factor.
In summary, while there are several potential causes for your abdominal pain and altered bowel habits, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve your quality of life and help prevent complications.
