Breast issues
Hello, Dr.
Chou.
I would like to ask you, I am currently 12 years old and I have a hard lump in my breast.
Is this normal? Also, one of my nipples is inverted; is this normal?
Qi Qi, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/11/28
Dr. Zhou Jiazhen reply Breast and Thyroid
Dear Qi Qi: 1.
If there is a lump, it is recommended to have an outpatient examination, as it is mostly a fibroadenoma.
If it increases in size or presents symptoms, surgery may sometimes be necessary.
2.
Inverted nipples are mostly congenital; you should monitor for any discharge or lumps.

Hello! It's great that you're reaching out with your concerns about breast health. At 12 years old, your body is likely going through many changes as you approach puberty, which can include breast development.
Firstly, the presence of a hard lump in your breast can be concerning, but it's important to understand that during puberty, many girls experience changes in their breast tissue. These changes can sometimes include the formation of lumps, which are often benign (non-cancerous). These lumps can be due to normal hormonal fluctuations that occur as your body develops. However, it is crucial to monitor any changes in size, shape, or discomfort associated with the lump. If the lump persists, grows, or causes pain, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.
Regarding your inverted nipple, this can also be a normal variation in breast anatomy. Some individuals naturally have inverted or flat nipples, and this is typically not a cause for concern. However, if you notice any sudden changes in the appearance of your nipple, such as it becoming inverted when it was previously protruding, or if there are any unusual symptoms like discharge or pain, it would be advisable to seek medical advice.
In summary, while both a hard lump and an inverted nipple can be normal during puberty, it is always best to err on the side of caution. If you have any doubts or if these changes cause you anxiety, please talk to a trusted adult or a healthcare provider. They can provide you with reassurance and, if necessary, conduct an examination to ensure everything is normal.
It's also important to remember that breast health is just one aspect of your overall well-being. If you ever feel overwhelmed or anxious about changes in your body, don't hesitate to reach out for support from family, friends, or a healthcare professional. They can help you navigate these changes and provide you with the information you need to feel comfortable and informed about your health.
