Delayed menstruation after sexual intercourse?
Doctor, my girlfriend had her period from October 27 to November 1, lasting 6 days.
On November 15, we had unprotected intercourse during her fertile window, but we used a condom the entire time.
Then, on November 22, we had intercourse again, also using a condom and without taking any medication.
I calculated that her period was supposed to start on November 27, but it hasn't arrived yet.
Recently, I've been stressed due to exams and work, and she has been experiencing breast tenderness.
However, I used a pregnancy test, and it showed one dark line and one faint line.
Doctor, could she be pregnant?

When it comes to the concern of a delayed period after intercourse, especially in the context of potential pregnancy, there are several factors to consider. Based on the information provided, your girlfriend's last menstrual period started on October 27 and lasted for six days, with a typical cycle of around 31 days. This means her next expected period would be around November 27. However, she had sexual intercourse during her fertile window on November 15 and again on November 22, both times using condoms.
First, it's important to note that while condoms are a reliable form of contraception when used correctly, they are not 100% effective. There is always a small chance of pregnancy, especially if the condom fails or is not used throughout the entire intercourse. However, since you mentioned that the condoms were used throughout, the likelihood of pregnancy is significantly reduced.
Now, regarding the delayed period: Stress can have a profound impact on the menstrual cycle. The pressures of exams and work can lead to hormonal fluctuations that may cause a delay in menstruation. This is known as stress-induced amenorrhea, where the body reacts to psychological stress by altering the normal hormonal signals that regulate the menstrual cycle.
You also mentioned that your girlfriend is experiencing breast tenderness, which can be a symptom associated with both premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and early pregnancy. However, breast tenderness alone is not a definitive indicator of pregnancy, as it can occur due to hormonal changes in the menstrual cycle.
The use of a pregnancy test that shows a faint line can be confusing. A faint line typically indicates that there is some level of the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) present, which is produced during pregnancy. However, the intensity of the line can vary based on several factors, including the sensitivity of the test and the timing of the test in relation to the expected period. If the test was taken too early, it might not detect enough hCG to show a strong positive result.
Given that your girlfriend's period is already delayed, it would be advisable for her to take another pregnancy test, preferably with the first morning urine, which is more concentrated and may provide a more accurate result. If the test continues to show a faint line or if her period does not arrive within a week, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may recommend a blood test for pregnancy, which is more sensitive than home urine tests.
In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy given the timing of intercourse, the use of condoms significantly reduces that risk. Stress and hormonal fluctuations could also be contributing to the delayed period. It is essential to monitor the situation and consider retesting for pregnancy if menstruation does not occur soon. If there are any further concerns or symptoms, seeking medical advice would be the best course of action.
