Can I get pregnant?
Hello, my period started on November 5 and ended on the 10th.
I had unprotected intercourse on the 11th.
My menstrual cycle is about 27 days.
Is there a chance I could be pregnant? Also, I've been feeling very sleepy lately; I haven't been doing much but still feel extremely tired and want to sleep.
J, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/11/28
Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Engaging in sexual intercourse on the seventh day is likely not during the ovulation period; however, there is still a slight chance of pregnancy.
If menstruation is delayed, a pregnancy test should be conducted.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
To determine whether you could be pregnant, it's essential to understand the timing of ovulation and the symptoms you are experiencing. Based on your menstrual cycle, which is approximately 27 days long, ovulation typically occurs around 13 to 15 days after the first day of your last period. In your case, since your last period started on November 5 and ended on November 10, ovulation would likely have occurred around November 18 to November 20. If you had unprotected intercourse on November 11, it is a bit early for conception, as sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, but the egg would not be available for fertilization until ovulation occurs.
However, if you had unprotected intercourse closer to your ovulation date, there is a possibility of pregnancy. The symptoms you mentioned, such as excessive tiredness and a strong desire to sleep, can be early signs of pregnancy. Fatigue is a common symptom during the early stages of pregnancy due to hormonal changes, particularly the increase in progesterone, which can make you feel more tired than usual.
In addition to fatigue, other early signs of pregnancy may include:
1. Missed Period: This is often the first sign that prompts women to take a pregnancy test.
2. Nausea or Morning Sickness: This can occur at any time of the day and is common in early pregnancy.
3. Breast Changes: Tenderness, swelling, or changes in the areola can occur.
4. Frequent Urination: As the uterus expands, it can put pressure on the bladder.
5. Mood Swings: Hormonal changes can lead to emotional fluctuations.
If you suspect you might be pregnant, the best course of action is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period, but some can detect pregnancy a few days before your expected period. If the test is positive, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider for confirmation and to begin prenatal care.
If you are feeling excessively tired and it is affecting your daily life, it is also important to consider other factors that could contribute to fatigue, such as stress, lack of sleep, or nutritional deficiencies. Ensuring you are eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and getting adequate rest can help improve your energy levels.
In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy based on your cycle and symptoms, the most reliable way to confirm pregnancy is through a home pregnancy test or a visit to your healthcare provider. If you have further concerns or if your symptoms persist, do not hesitate to seek medical advice.
