Menstrual delay of 16 days?

Hello doctor, my menstrual cycle is usually not very regular, but it's not extremely irregular either.
After my last period ended, about 25 days later, I was grinding against my boyfriend while he was wearing no underwear and I was wearing underwear, but he did not ejaculate.
This month, my period was delayed by a few days, and when my boyfriend helped me with his hand, there was a little blood on his hand afterward.
This month, my period is about 10 days late, and I noticed a very small amount of brown discharge that looked like dried blood on my underwear.
When I wiped, there was also a little on the toilet paper, but it only happened that one day and then stopped.
Now, I am 16 days late.
Is it possible that I could be pregnant? After all, he did not ejaculate and there was a layer of underwear in between.

Xiao Qian, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/11/29

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

The response indicates that pregnancy is unlikely.
If you are still concerned, please take a pregnancy test for confirmation.

More Info

It sounds like you're experiencing a concerning situation regarding a potential pregnancy, especially given the 16-day delay in your menstrual cycle. Let's break down the possibilities based on the information you've provided.

Firstly, it's important to note that pregnancy can occur even without direct ejaculation inside the vagina. This is due to the presence of pre-ejaculatory fluid, which can contain sperm. If there was any contact between your boyfriend's genital area and your own, even with clothing in between, there is a slight chance of sperm transferring and leading to pregnancy. However, this risk is generally considered low, especially if there was no direct ejaculation.

The symptoms you're describing—such as the delayed period and the unusual spotting—could be indicative of several things. A missed period is often one of the first signs of pregnancy, but it can also be caused by stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, or other health issues. The brown discharge you mentioned could be implantation bleeding, which occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus, but it can also be a sign of an irregular menstrual cycle or other factors.

Given that your period is typically irregular, it complicates the situation. Irregular cycles can make it difficult to determine when ovulation occurs, which is crucial for pinpointing potential conception dates. If you had intercourse around the time you might have been ovulating, there is a possibility of pregnancy, but without a clear cycle, it's hard to say for certain.

Since you mentioned that you experienced a small amount of blood on your boyfriend's hand after he helped you, this could be a sign of various things, including irritation or a minor injury, especially if there was any vigorous activity. If the bleeding was light and brown, it may not be a cause for concern, but it’s always best to monitor any unusual symptoms.

Given that you are now 16 days late, it would be advisable to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG, which is produced during pregnancy. If the test is positive, it would confirm pregnancy, and you should schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider for further evaluation. If the test is negative and your period still does not arrive, it would be wise to consult a doctor to explore other potential causes for the delay.

In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy given the circumstances, it is relatively low due to the lack of direct ejaculation. However, the best course of action is to take a pregnancy test and consult with a healthcare professional to address your concerns and ensure your health is monitored appropriately. Remember, your health and peace of mind are paramount, so seeking professional advice is always a good step when in doubt.
