Regarding fetal heartbeat?
Hello Dr.
Lu: My last menstrual period was on October 29.
I had intercourse on November 12, November 13, and November 16.
I took a pregnancy test on November 30 and it showed two lines.
I would like to ask when approximately in December I can have an ultrasound to detect a heartbeat? Additionally, I have been experiencing dull pain in my lower abdomen these past few days, occasionally sharp or stabbing pain that doesn't always occur in the same spot.
What could be the reason for this? Is it a normal phenomenon? Thank you for your response, Dr.
Lu.
JJ, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/12/03

1.
Some hospitals and clinics have high-resolution ultrasound capabilities, and around 5 to 6 weeks of pregnancy, or 3 to 4 weeks after conception, a heartbeat can typically be detected.
This should be possible soon; however, some hospitals and clinics may have limited ultrasound resolution, and it might take an additional week to see the heartbeat.
2.
Mild lower abdominal discomfort, occasional cramping, or sharp pains in varying locations can be considered normal, as long as the pain is not severe and there is no vaginal bleeding.
If there are concerns, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation.
Sincerely, Dr.
Li-Cheng Lu, Taoyuan Hospital.

More Info
Detecting a fetal heartbeat is one of the most exciting milestones in early pregnancy, and it typically occurs between 6 to 8 weeks of gestation. This is usually around the time when a transvaginal ultrasound is performed, as it provides a clearer image of the developing embryo and its heartbeat compared to an abdominal ultrasound. By the time you reach 8 weeks, most healthcare providers can reliably detect a heartbeat, which is a reassuring sign of a viable pregnancy.
In your case, since your last menstrual period started on October 29, and you had unprotected intercourse on November 12, 13, and 16, you would likely be able to detect a fetal heartbeat around December 10 to December 16, depending on the exact timing of ovulation and conception. If you take a pregnancy test and see two lines, it indicates that you are pregnant, and scheduling an ultrasound around the 6 to 8-week mark would be advisable to confirm the pregnancy and check for a heartbeat.
Regarding the discomfort you are experiencing in your lower abdomen, it is not uncommon for women in early pregnancy to feel various sensations, including cramping, pulling, or even sharp pains. These sensations can be attributed to several factors:
1. Implantation: After conception, the embryo implants itself into the uterine lining, which can cause mild cramping or discomfort.
2. Uterine Growth: As the pregnancy progresses, the uterus begins to expand to accommodate the growing embryo. This stretching can lead to sensations of tightness or discomfort.
3. Hormonal Changes: Pregnancy hormones, particularly progesterone, can affect the muscles and ligaments in the pelvic area, leading to various sensations.
4. Gas and Bloating: Hormonal changes can also slow down digestion, leading to gas and bloating, which can contribute to abdominal discomfort.
While mild cramping and discomfort can be normal, it is essential to monitor the severity and frequency of these pains. If you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding, or any other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to contact your healthcare provider immediately, as these could be signs of complications such as an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage.
In summary, you can expect to detect a fetal heartbeat between 6 to 8 weeks of pregnancy, and scheduling an ultrasound during that timeframe would be beneficial. As for the abdominal discomfort, while it can be a normal part of early pregnancy, always consult with your healthcare provider if you have any concerns or if the symptoms worsen. Regular prenatal care is essential for a healthy pregnancy, and your healthcare provider can offer personalized advice and reassurance throughout this exciting journey.
