Experiencing knee weakness around noon?
Doctor, I need your help.
Today marks the 6th day since I caught a cold, and this is the 3rd time I've experienced weakness in my knees about an hour before lunch.
After eating lunch and taking a nap, I feel stronger.
Secondly, since I got the cold, I've been hearing a constant "buzzing" sound in my ears throughout the day.
My shoulders are also stiff.
Lastly, I haven't been feeling very well mentally.
What could this be? Is it a cold syndrome, low blood pressure, or something else? Thank you!
Mr. Hong, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/12/03

Dear Mr.
Hong / 47 years old / Male
1.
Since the onset of your cold (on day 6), you have experienced weakness in your knees approximately one hour before lunch for the third time.
This weakness resolves after eating lunch and taking a nap.
Possible causes could include hypoglycemia, hypotension, overuse fatigue of the knees from standing at work, or the effects of cold medication, some of which may contain antihistamines.
2.
Since the onset of your cold, you have been hearing a "chirping" sound in your ears all day, which may indicate tinnitus.
This could be caused by viral-induced ear inflammation, elevated blood pressure, or side effects from medications (such as certain antibiotics that can cause tinnitus).
Additionally, the stiffness in your shoulders may suggest elevated blood pressure (which needs to be managed), lack of physical activity, or stress.
Consider incorporating traditional Chinese medicine techniques, such as tui na (Chinese therapeutic massage), to alleviate shoulder stiffness.
3.
You mentioned that your mental state is not very good.
Could this be related to cold syndrome? It is possible that once your cold resolves, your mental well-being will improve.
Wishing you good health.

Knee weakness, particularly when it occurs in conjunction with other symptoms such as ear ringing, shoulder stiffness, and general malaise, can be indicative of several underlying issues. Given that you have been experiencing these symptoms during a cold, it is essential to consider how viral infections can affect the body in various ways.
Firstly, the knee weakness you are experiencing could be related to a few factors. One possibility is that the viral infection is causing generalized fatigue and muscle weakness. Viral illnesses can lead to systemic inflammation, which may result in muscle soreness and weakness, particularly after periods of inactivity, such as after lunch. This phenomenon can be exacerbated by dehydration or inadequate nutrition, which are common during illness. If you are not eating well or hydrating sufficiently, your body may not have the energy it needs to function optimally.
Additionally, the timing of your knee weakness—occurring about an hour before lunch—could suggest that your body is experiencing a dip in energy levels. This could be due to low blood sugar, especially if you have not eaten for several hours. When blood sugar levels drop, it can lead to feelings of weakness, dizziness, and fatigue. After eating, your body receives a boost of energy, which may explain why you feel stronger after lunch.
The ringing in your ears, or tinnitus, can also be associated with viral infections, particularly those affecting the upper respiratory tract. Conditions like colds and flu can lead to inflammation and congestion in the Eustachian tubes, which connect the middle ear to the throat. This can create pressure changes in the ear, leading to sensations of ringing or buzzing. It is also worth noting that stress and anxiety, which can accompany illness, may exacerbate tinnitus symptoms.
Shoulder stiffness is another common symptom that can arise from prolonged inactivity or poor posture, especially when one is feeling unwell. When you are sick, you may be less active and more likely to adopt positions that strain your muscles, leading to stiffness and discomfort.
Regarding your mental state, feeling "not so good" mentally can be a natural response to being unwell. Illness can affect mood and cognitive function, leading to feelings of lethargy or depression. It is essential to take care of your mental health during this time, as physical and mental well-being are closely linked.
In terms of whether this is a syndrome related to your cold, low blood pressure, or something else, it is likely a combination of factors. While low blood pressure can cause weakness and dizziness, it is less common for it to cause knee weakness specifically. If you are concerned about your symptoms, particularly if they persist or worsen, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including checking your blood pressure, assessing your hydration status, and possibly conducting blood tests to rule out any underlying issues.
In summary, your symptoms of knee weakness, ear ringing, shoulder stiffness, and mental fatigue are likely interconnected and may be exacerbated by your current viral illness. Ensuring adequate hydration, nutrition, and rest is crucial for recovery. If symptoms persist, seeking medical advice is recommended to rule out any serious conditions and to receive appropriate care.
