There is a mass in the lateral genital area and groin?
Hello, doctor.
After having intercourse with my boyfriend on November 28, I experienced persistent itching in my genital area that lasted until November 30.
I used an ice pack to relieve the itching.
The next day, on December 1, I noticed a lump on the outer left side of my genital area, which was slightly painful when pressed.
By December 3, the lump was still there, but it no longer hurt when touched.
I also discovered a similar, smaller lump in my left groin area.
Could you please help me understand what might be happening? Thank you, doctor.

Understanding groin and outer genital swelling can be quite complex, as there are several potential causes for these symptoms. Based on the timeline and symptoms you provided, it seems that you experienced itching in the genital area shortly after sexual intercourse, followed by the development of a painful lump on the left side of the outer genital area and a smaller lump in the left groin region.
There are several possible explanations for these symptoms:
1. Inguinal Hernia: This occurs when tissue, such as part of the intestine, protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. It can cause swelling in the groin area and may be associated with discomfort, especially when pressure is applied.
2. Lymphadenopathy: The presence of swollen lymph nodes in the groin area could indicate an infection or inflammation. This could be due to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or other infections in the genital region. The lymph nodes can become enlarged as they respond to infection.
3. Folliculitis or Ingrown Hair: If the swelling is localized to the outer genital area, it could be due to folliculitis, which is the inflammation of hair follicles. This can occur after shaving or due to friction and can present as painful lumps.
4. Cysts: Sebaceous cysts or other types of cysts can develop in the genital area and may become inflamed or infected, leading to swelling and discomfort.
5. STIs: Certain sexually transmitted infections, such as herpes or syphilis, can cause swelling and lumps in the genital area. Itching is also a common symptom associated with these infections.
6. Allergic Reaction or Irritation: Sometimes, irritation from soaps, lotions, or even friction during intercourse can lead to localized swelling and itching.
Given the symptoms you described, it is essential to seek medical attention for a proper evaluation. A healthcare provider will likely perform a physical examination and may recommend tests such as blood tests or imaging studies to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In the meantime, here are some general recommendations:
- Avoid Irritants: Refrain from using any new soaps, lotions, or other products in the genital area that could cause irritation.
- Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress can help reduce swelling and alleviate discomfort.
- Avoid Sexual Activity: Until you have a clearer understanding of what is causing your symptoms, it may be wise to avoid sexual activity to prevent further irritation or transmission of any potential infection.
In conclusion, while there are several potential causes for the swelling and itching you are experiencing, a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is crucial for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Please make an appointment with your doctor or a specialist in sexual health to discuss your symptoms in detail.
