Saphenous vein varicosity issues?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask, it has been almost a month since my surgery! However, I have noticed that the size of my testicles is more pronounced than before the surgery! Is this due to the surgery causing testicular atrophy? The left side already felt sore and warm.
The warmth sensation has disappeared after the surgery, but the soreness continues! Is this feeling caused by testicular atrophy, or is it something that varies from person to person after surgery?

The phrase "the size of the testicles is noticeably different than before surgery" is ambiguous.
It could mean that they are either larger or smaller than before the procedure.
Surgery should not cause testicular atrophy.
If there are concerns about size, it is recommended to undergo an ultrasound examination at a clinic.
However, postoperative sensations can indeed vary from person to person.
Online responses are for reference only, and it is still advisable to seek medical attention if necessary.

After undergoing varicocele surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience changes in testicular size and sensation. Your concerns about testicular atrophy and persistent discomfort are valid and warrant a detailed explanation.
Firstly, it's important to understand that varicocele surgery, typically performed to alleviate symptoms associated with enlarged veins in the scrotum, can lead to various outcomes. One of the potential complications of any surgical procedure is the risk of tissue damage, which can result in changes in size or function of the affected organs. In the case of varicocele surgery, some patients may experience a temporary or permanent change in testicular size.
Testicular atrophy, or shrinkage, can occur for several reasons post-surgery. One possibility is that the blood flow dynamics to the testicle change after the varicocele is corrected. The varicocele often causes increased blood flow and pressure in the affected veins, which can lead to testicular enlargement. Once the varicocele is treated, the blood flow may normalize, leading to a reduction in size. However, this does not necessarily mean that the testicle is unhealthy or that there has been permanent damage.
Regarding the sensations you are experiencing, such as the persistent "sour" or "warm" feeling, these could be attributed to several factors. Post-operative inflammation is common and can cause discomfort that may mimic the sensations you felt prior to surgery. The surgical procedure itself can also lead to nerve irritation or changes in the surrounding tissue, which might contribute to ongoing discomfort. It is essential to monitor these sensations, as they can vary significantly from person to person and may improve over time as healing progresses.
In some cases, the size difference you are observing could be a normal part of the healing process. After surgery, it is not unusual for one testicle to appear larger or smaller than the other temporarily. If the discomfort persists or worsens, or if you notice any other concerning symptoms such as swelling, redness, or changes in urinary function, it is crucial to follow up with your urologist. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess the blood flow and structure of the testicles to rule out any complications.
In conclusion, while it is possible that you may experience some degree of testicular atrophy following varicocele surgery, it is also likely that the changes you are observing are part of the normal healing process. The persistent sensations you are feeling could be due to post-operative inflammation or nerve irritation. It is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider, who can provide personalized advice and reassurance based on your specific situation. Regular follow-up appointments are vital to ensure that your recovery is progressing as expected and to address any concerns you may have.
