Can I get pregnant?

I took emergency contraceptive pills twice last week, spaced one day apart, but my boyfriend did not ejaculate and did not use a condom.
Then, I experienced bleeding on Wednesday.
If we have unprotected intercourse with ejaculation the day after the bleeding, is there a chance of pregnancy? Also, will my menstrual cycle be affected?

Qi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/12/06

1.
It is unclear whether the contraceptive pill you are taking is a pre-coital contraceptive or a post-coital contraceptive.
2.
Without contraception, there is a possibility of pregnancy.
3.
It is possible that your menstrual cycle may become irregular; please seek medical attention.
Sincerely, Dr.

When it comes to the effectiveness of birth control pills and the risk of pregnancy without using condoms, it’s important to understand how hormonal contraceptives work and the factors that can influence their effectiveness.

Birth control pills, when taken correctly, are highly effective at preventing pregnancy. They work primarily by inhibiting ovulation, meaning that they prevent the ovaries from releasing eggs. Additionally, they thicken cervical mucus, which makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the uterus, and they thin the lining of the uterus, making it less likely for a fertilized egg to implant.

In your case, you mentioned that you took the birth control pills correctly, with doses taken a day apart. If you have been consistent with your pill regimen and have taken them as directed, the likelihood of becoming pregnant is significantly reduced, even if your boyfriend did not use a condom and did not ejaculate inside you. However, it is important to note that no contraceptive method is 100% effective, and there is always a small risk of pregnancy.

The bleeding you experienced on Wednesday could be a breakthrough bleed, which is not uncommon when taking birth control pills, especially if you have just started a new pack or if there has been any inconsistency in taking the pills. Breakthrough bleeding can occur due to hormonal fluctuations and does not necessarily indicate that your menstrual cycle is becoming irregular. However, if you notice significant changes in your menstrual cycle or if you have concerns about potential pregnancy, it is advisable to take a pregnancy test or consult with a healthcare provider.

If you are concerned about the risk of pregnancy, you might consider using emergency contraception (EC) if you had unprotected intercourse within the last few days. EC is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex, and it can help prevent pregnancy if taken within a specific time frame.

In summary, while the chances of getting pregnant while on birth control pills and having unprotected sex are low, they are not zero. If you have any doubts or experience unusual symptoms, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation. Additionally, if you are looking for more reliable protection, consider discussing the option of using condoms in conjunction with your birth control pills for added security against both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
