I would like to ask when conception occurs during pregnancy?

I would like to ask about my situation: my period ended on November 4th, and I had unprotected intercourse on November 9th.
I had unprotected intercourse again on November 10th, and then I used condoms on the 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 30th.
For the first few days, I did not use protection.
I tested for pregnancy with a home pregnancy test after 3-4 days, and it only showed one line.
After about two more days, I tested again, and a faint pink line appeared.
As of today, December 7th, my period still hasn't arrived.
Is it possible that I am pregnant? I would like to know approximately when conception might have occurred.
Thank you, doctor.

Xiaomi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/12/07

It is recommended to visit a hospital or clinic for an ultrasound examination.
Based on the size of the gestational sac, the gestational age can be calculated, which can then be used to estimate the time of conception.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

Understanding the timing of conception and pregnancy can be quite complex, especially when considering factors such as menstrual cycles, ovulation, and the timing of sexual intercourse. Based on the information you've provided, let's break down the situation.

First, it's important to understand how pregnancy is typically calculated. The gestational age of a pregnancy is usually determined from the first day of the last menstrual period (LMP). This means that if your last period started on November 4, you would typically be considered to be about 4 weeks pregnant by December 2, assuming a regular 28-day cycle. Ovulation usually occurs about 14 days after the start of your last period, which in your case would be around November 18. This is the time when conception is most likely to occur if you have unprotected intercourse.

You mentioned having unprotected intercourse on November 9 and then again on the 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 30th. Since sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, it is possible that intercourse on November 9 could lead to conception if ovulation occurred shortly after that date. However, if ovulation occurred later, such as around the 23rd, then intercourse on that date could also result in conception.

The pregnancy test results you described are also significant. A negative result followed by a faint positive line suggests that you may indeed be pregnant, especially since you have missed your period. Home pregnancy tests work by detecting the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. If you tested too early, it’s possible that the levels of hCG were not high enough to be detected, which could explain the initial negative result.

Given that you have missed your period and are seeing signs of a positive pregnancy test, it is reasonable to conclude that you may be pregnant. The timing of conception could likely be around mid to late November, depending on your ovulation cycle and the timing of intercourse.

In terms of next steps, it would be advisable to confirm your pregnancy with a healthcare provider. They can perform a blood test to measure hCG levels more accurately and can also provide you with information on what to expect in the coming weeks. Additionally, they can help you understand your estimated due date based on your last menstrual period and any ultrasounds that may be performed.

It's also important to consider your overall health and any lifestyle changes you may need to make now that you suspect you are pregnant. Prenatal care is crucial for a healthy pregnancy, so scheduling an appointment with your healthcare provider as soon as possible is recommended.

In summary, based on your menstrual cycle and the timing of intercourse, it is likely that conception occurred in late November. The missed period and positive pregnancy test further support this possibility. Consulting with a healthcare provider will provide you with the best guidance moving forward.
