Yawning causes eye pain?
In the early morning of December 7th, while yawning and preparing to sleep, I experienced a popping sensation in my left eye socket accompanied by a sharp pain when I yawned, in addition to a clicking sound in my jaw.
I would like to know if this is related to my previously measured elevated intraocular pressure (16 in one eye and 21 in the other).
Could this be a sign of worsening eye pressure? Upon waking up, the yawning sensation persisted, although the pain was less intense, and I noticed a significant feeling of pressure in my left eye socket, while my right eye felt normal.
Interestingly, my left eye actually has better vision.

Yawning and experiencing eye pain can indeed raise concerns, especially for individuals with a history of elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). In your case, where you have previously measured eye pressures of 16 mmHg in one eye and 21 mmHg in the other, it is essential to consider several factors that could contribute to your symptoms.
Firstly, yawning is a natural physiological response that can lead to various sensations in the head and eyes. When you yawn, the muscles around your eyes and face contract, which can sometimes cause a temporary sensation of pressure or discomfort in the eye area. This is particularly true if you have any underlying tension or strain in the ocular muscles or surrounding tissues. The "pop" sensation you described in your left eye could be attributed to this muscular contraction, rather than a direct correlation with your eye pressure.
However, the fact that you are experiencing pain and a feeling of pressure in your left eye, especially if it is accompanied by a noticeable difference in sensation compared to your right eye, warrants further investigation. Elevated eye pressure can lead to discomfort, and in some cases, it may be associated with conditions such as glaucoma. Although your previous measurements do not indicate a critical level of IOP, the fluctuation in pressure and the symptoms you are experiencing could suggest that monitoring your eye health is crucial.
It is also important to note that eye pain can arise from various causes unrelated to intraocular pressure. For instance, sinus issues, tension headaches, or even eye strain from prolonged screen time can manifest as discomfort around the eyes. Given that you mentioned a notable sensation in your left eye, it might be beneficial to consider whether you have been engaging in activities that could lead to eye strain or if there are any sinus-related symptoms present.
Regarding your concern about whether these symptoms indicate worsening eye pressure, it is advisable to consult with an eye care professional. They can conduct a comprehensive eye examination, including measuring your IOP and assessing your optic nerve health. This evaluation is essential, especially since you have a history of elevated eye pressure. Regular monitoring can help detect any changes early and allow for timely intervention if necessary.
In summary, while yawning can lead to temporary sensations of discomfort in the eyes, the persistent pain and pressure you are experiencing should not be overlooked. It is crucial to maintain regular follow-ups with your eye doctor, especially given your history of elevated IOP. They can provide you with tailored advice and treatment options to manage your eye health effectively. Additionally, if you notice any changes in your vision or if the pain worsens, seek immediate medical attention to rule out any serious conditions.
