Delayed menstruation or pregnancy?

Hello Doctor, my menstrual period ended on November 2nd, but I had intercourse with my boyfriend on November 14th and 25th.
Today is December 7th, and I would like to ask if I might be pregnant or if it’s just a delayed period? If I am indeed pregnant and do not want to continue with the pregnancy, how should I handle this? I do not want my parents to find out, as they would be very upset.
If I am pregnant, what should I do regarding abortion?

Jiang Ziwei, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/12/07

Consult a physician to confirm whether you are pregnant.
If you are considering an abortion, discuss it with your doctor.
According to legal regulations, a minor must obtain consent from a guardian in order to undergo an abortion.

When it comes to missed periods and the possibility of pregnancy, it's essential to consider several factors. Based on your timeline, your last menstrual period ended on November 2nd, and you had sexual intercourse on November 14th and 25th. As of December 7th, you have not yet had your period, which raises the question of whether you could be pregnant or if your period is simply delayed.

Firstly, it's important to understand that a missed period can be a sign of pregnancy, but it can also be caused by various other factors. Stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, and lifestyle factors can all contribute to irregular menstrual cycles. Given that you had sexual intercourse during your fertile window (around ovulation), there is a possibility of pregnancy, especially if contraception was not used consistently.

To determine whether you are pregnant, the most reliable method is to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are designed to detect the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced shortly after a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. For the most accurate results, it is recommended to wait at least one week after your missed period to take the test. If you take it too early, it may not detect the pregnancy even if you are pregnant.

If you take a pregnancy test and it comes back positive, or if you continue to miss your period, it is advisable to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider. They can perform a more sensitive blood test and provide you with options moving forward.

Regarding your concerns about an unwanted pregnancy, it's crucial to know that there are options available. If you are considering terminating a pregnancy, you should seek medical advice as soon as possible. In the United States, there are typically two main methods for abortion: medication (often referred to as the abortion pill) and in-clinic procedures. The choice between these methods depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy and your personal health circumstances.

1. Medication Abortion: This method involves taking two different medications. The first medication, mifepristone, is taken at a healthcare provider's office, and the second medication, misoprostol, is taken at home. This method is usually effective up to 10 weeks into the pregnancy.

2. In-Clinic Abortion: This can be done through various procedures, including aspiration or dilation and curettage (D&C). The method used will depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy.

It is important to note that seeking an abortion is a personal decision, and it is essential to have support during this time. If you are worried about confidentiality, many clinics offer services that respect your privacy.

In conclusion, if you suspect you might be pregnant due to a missed period, taking a home pregnancy test is the first step. If positive, consult a healthcare provider to discuss your options. Remember, you are not alone, and there are resources available to help you navigate this situation.
