How long after taking emergency contraception can I take a pregnancy test?
Hello Doctor: My last menstrual period started on November 15.
I had sexual intercourse (with ejaculation) on November 30 at 6:00 PM, but I took a single dose of emergency contraception at 6:30 PM.
The next morning at 10:00 AM, I went to the gynecologist and received two more pills, and I took one at around 10:30 AM, followed by another one 12 hours later.
My question is: *Is this method of contraception effective?* How long after taking the medication can I take a pregnancy test? Thank you!

Hello: (1) The success rate of emergency contraceptive pills is approximately 92-99% when taken within 12 hours.
Different reports may vary, but the success rate is quite high.
(2) It is usually sufficient to take a pregnancy test after a missed period.
Thank you for your message!

After taking emergency contraception, it is important to understand how it works and when to take a pregnancy test to ensure accurate results. Emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs), such as Plan B or Ella, are designed to prevent pregnancy after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure, such as a broken condom. They are most effective when taken as soon as possible after the incident, ideally within 72 hours for Plan B and up to 120 hours for Ella.
In your case, since you took the emergency contraceptive pill shortly after unprotected intercourse, it is likely that the medication was effective in preventing pregnancy. However, no contraceptive method is 100% effective, so there is still a small chance of pregnancy.
Regarding when to take a pregnancy test after using emergency contraception, it is generally recommended to wait until at least the first day of your expected period. This is because pregnancy tests detect the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. If you take a test too early, the levels of hCG may not be high enough to detect, leading to a false negative result.
If your period is late by a week or more after the expected date, you should take a pregnancy test. If the test is positive, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider to discuss your options. If the test is negative but your period still does not arrive, you may want to follow up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, your use of emergency contraception shortly after unprotected intercourse is a proactive step to prevent pregnancy, and it is likely to be effective. You should wait until your expected period is missed by at least a week before taking a pregnancy test for the most accurate result. If you have any further concerns or experience unusual symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance.
