Bleeding after the first sexual intercourse coinciding with the expected menstrual period?
Last month, my period was from November 10 to November 15, and my average cycle length is 32 days.
I had sexual intercourse for the first time on December 2, and again on December 5 and December 6, all with protection.
Since December 8, I have been experiencing intermittent brown discharge, and each day there is only a small amount of brown blood on my pad (sometimes there is a bit of red blood when I wipe, but mostly it is brown).
This has been going on for four days.
In the past, my period would start with brown blood on the first day, followed by five days of normal red blood.
What could be happening this month? Is this my period? Is there a possibility of pregnancy?

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
1.
If effective contraception is practiced, such as consistently taking birth control pills or using condoms throughout intercourse, the likelihood of pregnancy is very low.
2.
Irregular bleeding can have many possible causes, including but not limited to: menstrual irregularities, inflammation, pregnancy, polyps, or tumors.

More Info
Experiencing brown discharge after your first sexual encounter can understandably cause concern, especially if it deviates from your usual menstrual pattern. Let's break down what this could mean and what steps you might consider taking.
First, brown discharge is often a result of old blood leaving the body. This can happen at the beginning or end of a menstrual period. Since you mentioned that your last menstrual period was from November 10 to November 15 and that you had sexual encounters on December 2, 5, and 6, it's possible that the brown discharge you are experiencing could be related to your menstrual cycle rather than a sign of pregnancy or an infection.
Given your average cycle length of 32 days, if we calculate from your last period, your next expected period would be around December 12. The brown discharge starting on December 8 could indicate that your body is preparing for your next menstrual cycle, or it could be a sign of ovulation bleeding, which can occur in some individuals around the midpoint of their cycle. However, since you had sexual intercourse shortly before noticing the discharge, it’s also important to consider the possibility of implantation bleeding, which can occur if a fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining. This typically happens about 6 to 12 days after conception, which aligns with your timeline.
Regarding the presence of red blood mixed with the brown discharge, this could indicate that your body is shedding some endometrial tissue, which is common during the menstrual cycle. However, if the discharge continues or is accompanied by other symptoms such as severe cramping, fever, or an unusual odor, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider to rule out any infections or other concerns.
As for the concern about pregnancy, if you engaged in protected sex using condoms, the risk of pregnancy is significantly reduced, but not entirely eliminated. Condoms can sometimes fail due to breakage or slippage. If you are worried about the possibility of pregnancy, taking a home pregnancy test after a missed period can provide clarity. Most tests are reliable about a week after a missed period.
In summary, the brown discharge you are experiencing could be a normal part of your menstrual cycle, possibly indicating the onset of your period or other benign causes. However, if you have any doubts or if the discharge changes in character or is accompanied by concerning symptoms, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step. Your health and peace of mind are important, and a healthcare professional can provide personalized guidance based on your specific situation.
