The pros and cons of masturbation?

Masturbation is generally considered a normal and healthy sexual activity.
The frequency of masturbation varies widely among individuals, and what is considered "too much" can differ from person to person.
For some, masturbating once a day may be normal, while for others, a few times a week may be sufficient.
Premature ejaculation is typically defined as ejaculation that occurs within one minute of vaginal penetration, but it can also be characterized by a lack of control over ejaculation, leading to distress for the individual or their partner.
Excessive masturbation is not directly linked to the development of varicocele (enlargement of veins within the scrotum), but if it leads to physical discomfort or interferes with daily life, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.
Thank you for your questions.

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello, basically Western medicine does not discuss masturbation and does not consider frequency to cause disease.
Only Traditional Chinese Medicine has relevant guidelines.
There is no specific time definition for premature ejaculation.
It is considered premature ejaculation if the male cannot help the female achieve orgasm during sexual intercourse.
Therefore, the same erection duration may not be considered premature with one partner (Partner A), but could be deemed premature with another partner (Partner B).

Varicocele is caused by the structure of blood vessels and abdominal pressure.
Generally, masturbation cannot cause varicocele.
However, if varicocele already exists, increased abdominal pressure can worsen the condition.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again for further discussion and research.
Answers found online should only serve as a reference; if necessary, it is important to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility.

More Info

Masturbation is a natural and common behavior that many people engage in throughout their lives. Understanding whether it is "good" or "bad" involves looking at various aspects, including physical health, mental well-being, and social implications.

Health Benefits of Masturbation
1. Physical Health: Masturbation has several health benefits. It can help relieve sexual tension, reduce stress, and promote relaxation. It is also associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer in men, as regular ejaculation may help clear out potentially harmful substances from the prostate.

2. Mental Well-being: Engaging in masturbation can lead to the release of endorphins and other feel-good hormones, which can improve mood and reduce feelings of anxiety and depression. It can also help individuals learn about their own bodies, which can enhance sexual experiences with partners.

3. Sexual Function: Masturbation can help individuals understand their sexual preferences and responses, which can lead to improved sexual experiences with partners. It can also help with issues like premature ejaculation by allowing individuals to practice control over their ejaculation.

Frequency of Masturbation
There is no universally "correct" frequency for masturbation. What is considered normal varies widely among individuals. Some may masturbate daily, while others may do so weekly or even less frequently. The key is to listen to your body and understand what feels right for you.
- Too Much or Too Little?: If masturbation interferes with daily life, responsibilities, or relationships, it may be considered excessive. However, if it is a healthy part of your sexual expression and does not cause distress, it is generally not a problem.

Concerns About Early Ejaculation
Early ejaculation, or premature ejaculation, is typically defined as ejaculation that occurs with minimal sexual stimulation and before the individual wishes it to happen, often within one minute of penetration. This condition is not directly linked to the frequency of masturbation. However, if someone is accustomed to quick release during masturbation, it may affect their performance during partnered sexual activities.

Potential Risks
1. Physical Risks: While masturbation is generally safe, excessive or aggressive masturbation can lead to physical discomfort or injury, such as skin irritation or soreness. Concerns about conditions like varicocele (enlargement of veins within the scrotum) are more related to genetic predispositions and other factors rather than masturbation itself.

2. Psychological Risks: If masturbation becomes a compulsive behavior that interferes with daily life or relationships, it may be indicative of underlying issues such as anxiety or depression. In such cases, seeking help from a mental health professional can be beneficial.

Conclusion
In summary, masturbation is a normal and healthy sexual activity for most individuals. It can provide various physical and mental health benefits when practiced in moderation. There is no specific "right" frequency, as it varies from person to person. If you have concerns about your sexual health or behaviors, it may be helpful to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice and support. Remember, sexual health is an important aspect of overall well-being, and open discussions about it can help demystify common concerns.
