Retinal tear laser photocoagulation and changes in vision?

Hello Doctor, I would like to ask about the findings from my fundus examination at the ophthalmology clinic this past Monday.
I discovered that there is a retinal tear in my left eye, which I had experienced in the same eye a few years ago.
The attending physician indicated that there is now another small hole, and they performed laser photocoagulation in the office.
Since the day after the procedure, I have been experiencing a sudden flash of a dark shadow in my lower visual field in the left eye, which is not persistent but occurs intermittently, especially when looking at lighter backgrounds.
Additionally, my left eye feels somewhat sore and fatigued.
The doctor has scheduled a follow-up appointment for next Monday.
I would like to know if this is a common postoperative situation during the recovery period, and if I should wait until Monday for the doctor to confirm, or if this is an abnormal situation that requires me to return to the clinic sooner.
Thank you!

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding the changes you are experiencing after your recent laser treatment for a retinal hole. It's understandable to feel concerned about any new symptoms following a procedure, especially when it involves the delicate structures of the eye.

Firstly, it's important to recognize that experiencing some visual disturbances after laser treatment for a retinal hole can be relatively common. The laser procedure itself is designed to create a scar around the retinal hole, which helps to seal it and prevent further complications such as retinal detachment. However, the healing process can lead to various sensations and visual changes as the eye adjusts.

The black shadow or flashes of light you are noticing in your peripheral vision could be related to several factors. One possibility is that the laser treatment may have temporarily affected the vitreous gel in your eye. The vitreous is a gel-like substance that fills the eye and can sometimes pull away from the retina, especially after a procedure. This can lead to sensations of floaters or flashes, which are often benign but can be alarming.

The feeling of fatigue or discomfort in your eye is also not uncommon after such procedures. Your eye may be working harder to adjust to the changes, and this can lead to temporary strain. However, if the discomfort persists or worsens, it is essential to communicate this to your eye doctor.

Regarding your upcoming follow-up appointment, it is generally advisable to keep that appointment as scheduled. Your doctor will be able to assess your eye's healing progress and determine if what you are experiencing is within the normal range of recovery. However, if you experience any sudden changes in vision, increased pain, or any other concerning symptoms before your appointment, it would be prudent to seek immediate medical attention.

In summary, while some visual disturbances and discomfort can be expected after laser treatment for a retinal hole, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. Keeping your follow-up appointment will allow your doctor to evaluate your condition comprehensively. If you have any doubts or if your symptoms change significantly, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider sooner. Your eye health is paramount, and it’s always better to err on the side of caution.

Wishing you a smooth recovery and improved vision ahead!
