If there is no menstrual period and a pregnancy test shows negative results, is it still possible to be pregnant?

Hello, I have been experiencing irregular menstrual cycles for a long time, so I relied on Clomid and monitored my ovulation for both of my previous pregnancies.
Now, I want to conceive my third child, so I took ovulation medication, but since my doctor is on vacation, I could only use ovulation test strips.
On day 18, I detected that I was preparing to ovulate (December 2).
I had intercourse on December 2 and December 4.
On the 18th, my period did not arrive, and the pregnancy test was negative.
I suspect that I might have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).
Today is the 19th, and I still haven't gotten my period.
Is it possible that I could be pregnant? One additional note: since I detected ovulation, I have been experiencing increased cervical mucus.
Thank you!

You can go to the hospital for a blood test to check for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

When it comes to the question of whether you can get pregnant without a regular menstrual period, it's essential to understand the complexities of ovulation and menstrual cycles, especially in the context of irregular cycles and conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

Firstly, it is indeed possible to conceive without having a regular menstrual cycle. Many women with irregular periods, including those with PCOS, can still ovulate, which is crucial for conception. Ovulation is the release of an egg from the ovary, and if sperm is present during this time, fertilization can occur, leading to pregnancy.
In your case, you mentioned using Clomid, a medication often prescribed to stimulate ovulation in women who have difficulty ovulating on their own. This medication can help regulate your cycles and increase the chances of ovulation, even if your periods are irregular. The fact that you were able to detect ovulation using ovulation test strips indicates that your body was preparing for ovulation, which is a positive sign.

The presence of increased cervical mucus (often described as "egg white" consistency) after detecting ovulation is also a good indicator that your body is functioning as it should during this phase. This type of cervical mucus helps sperm travel through the reproductive tract, increasing the chances of conception.

Now, regarding your missed period and negative pregnancy test, it's important to note that pregnancy tests measure the hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which is produced after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. If you ovulated later than expected or if implantation has not yet occurred, it is possible to get a negative result even if you are pregnant. Additionally, hormonal fluctuations due to PCOS can sometimes lead to delayed periods and affect the accuracy of home pregnancy tests.

If you are still experiencing symptoms of pregnancy, such as a missed period, increased cervical mucus, or other early signs, it may be worth waiting a few more days and testing again. If your period does not arrive and you continue to get negative tests, consider consulting with your healthcare provider for further evaluation. They may recommend a blood test, which is more sensitive than home urine tests and can provide a more accurate result.

In summary, while irregular cycles can complicate the process of conception, they do not eliminate the possibility of becoming pregnant. Monitoring ovulation through methods like ovulation predictor kits, as you have done, is an effective way to increase your chances of conception. If you suspect you have PCOS, it is advisable to discuss this with your healthcare provider, as they can offer tailored advice and treatment options to help you achieve your goal of pregnancy.
Lastly, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, managing stress, and following your doctor's recommendations regarding fertility treatments can also play a significant role in your journey to conceive. Good luck, and I hope you receive the news you are hoping for soon!
