Delayed menstruation?

On December 7th, I had unprotected intercourse but there was no ejaculation inside.
As of today, December 21st, my period has not arrived, but I am experiencing breast tenderness.
Could this be a delayed period?

Mr. Huang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/12/21

Hello: When experiencing a delayed menstrual period, the first consideration should be whether there is a possibility of pregnancy.
Currently, pregnancy tests are very convenient, so it is advisable to take one first.
If the test is negative, then other causes should be considered, such as anovulation due to excessive stress, which can be treated with menstrual induction medication.

Late periods can be a source of concern for many individuals, and understanding the potential causes and symptoms is essential for addressing any underlying issues. In your case, having unprotected intercourse on December 7 and experiencing a missed period by December 21, along with breast tenderness, raises several possibilities.

Firstly, it's important to consider that a late period can be caused by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, stress, changes in weight, excessive exercise, or underlying health conditions. The menstrual cycle is regulated by a complex interplay of hormones, and any disruption in this balance can lead to delayed menstruation.
Given that you had unprotected sex, one of the first considerations should be the possibility of pregnancy. Breast tenderness is a common early symptom of pregnancy, along with other signs such as nausea, fatigue, and frequent urination. If you suspect that you might be pregnant, taking a home pregnancy test can provide clarity. These tests are generally accurate when taken after a missed period, so it would be advisable to wait a few days and then test for the most reliable results.

If the pregnancy test is negative, other factors could be at play. Stress is a significant contributor to menstrual irregularities. If you've been experiencing increased stress or anxiety, this could affect your cycle. Additionally, significant changes in weight—either gain or loss—can also impact your menstrual regularity.
Another important aspect to consider is the possibility of conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders, which can lead to irregular periods. If you have a history of irregular cycles or other symptoms such as excessive hair growth, acne, or weight changes, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In terms of symptoms, breast tenderness can occur due to hormonal fluctuations, which can happen in the lead-up to your period or due to pregnancy. If your period does not arrive soon, and you continue to experience discomfort or other concerning symptoms, it would be wise to seek medical advice.

In summary, while a late period can be concerning, it can result from various factors, including pregnancy, stress, hormonal imbalances, or underlying health conditions. If you suspect pregnancy, taking a test is a good first step. If the test is negative or if you have ongoing concerns, consulting with a healthcare provider can help identify the cause and determine the appropriate course of action. Remember, your health is important, and seeking professional guidance is always a prudent choice when faced with uncertainties regarding your menstrual health.
