Testicular issues
I would like to ask the doctor about discomfort in the testicles: I have been experiencing discomfort in my left testicle since about last week (it's not exactly pain), with a persistent feeling of swelling that has lasted for five days without subsiding, and there are no accompanying symptoms.
The shape of the testicle has not changed.
The issue arose after I switched to new underwear, which is tighter than my previous ones.
After noticing the problem, I immediately switched back to my old underwear, but the situation did not improve or worsen.
I also have a habit of masturbation.
Additionally, I have been experiencing lower back pain for two months.
What could be the situation described above?

High school student: Hello, it is difficult to determine whether it might be an infection, muscle soreness, nerve pain, or if there is nothing wrong at all.
I suggest providing a detailed description, such as the frequency and duration of the pain, any related factors (such as weather, exercise, masturbation, etc.), whether the pain radiates to other areas, and the intensity of the pain: severe, mild, etc.
If there are any unclear aspects, feel free to ask again so we can further discuss and investigate.
Online responses can only serve as a reference; if necessary, it is still important to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility.

Testicular discomfort can be a concerning symptom, and it’s important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical attention. Based on your description, you have been experiencing discomfort in your left testicle for about five days, accompanied by a sensation of swelling, but without significant pain or changes in shape. Additionally, you mentioned a history of lower back pain lasting two months.
There are several potential causes for testicular discomfort, and they can range from benign to more serious conditions. Here are some common causes:
1. Epididymitis: This is an inflammation of the epididymis, the tube that stores and carries sperm. It can cause swelling and discomfort in the testicle. Epididymitis can be caused by infections, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or non-infectious factors such as trauma or a reaction to certain medications.
2. Orchitis: This is an inflammation of the testicle itself, which can occur due to viral infections (like mumps) or bacterial infections. Symptoms may include swelling, tenderness, and discomfort.
3. Testicular torsion: This is a medical emergency where the spermatic cord becomes twisted, cutting off blood supply to the testicle. Symptoms typically include sudden severe pain, swelling, and nausea. Although you mentioned that your discomfort is not severe, it’s important to be aware of this condition, as it requires immediate treatment.
4. Hernia: An inguinal hernia occurs when tissue, such as part of the intestine, protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. This can cause discomfort in the groin or testicular area, especially when lifting or straining.
5. Varicocele: This is an enlargement of the veins within the scrotum and can cause a dull ache or discomfort, often described as a feeling of heaviness.
6. Trauma or irritation: You mentioned that you recently switched to tighter underwear. Sometimes, tight clothing can cause discomfort or irritation in the testicular area, leading to a sensation of swelling or discomfort.
Given that your discomfort has persisted for five days without improvement, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination and may recommend further tests, such as an ultrasound, to assess for any underlying issues.
Additionally, the concurrent lower back pain you mentioned could be related or separate. Conditions such as kidney stones or referred pain from spinal issues can sometimes manifest as testicular discomfort.
In summary, while there are several potential causes for your symptoms, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment based on your specific situation. Early intervention can help address any underlying issues and alleviate your discomfort.
