Bleeding persists three days after a miscarriage procedure?
Hello doctor, my girlfriend underwent a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure on December 19, which was successful.
However, today (December 24), she is still experiencing bleeding.
The first three days had stable bleeding, but on the evening of the 23rd, the amount increased significantly, accompanied by brown blood clots and lower abdominal pain.
Is it normal for the bleeding to last more than three days? She has been taking her medication as prescribed.

Generally, it is considered normal to have light vaginal bleeding within a week after an abortion procedure.
Given your situation, I believe this is still within the normal range.
I recommend a routine follow-up appointment one week post-procedure, unless the bleeding increases to a volume greater than your heaviest menstrual flow and is accompanied by persistent lower abdominal pain, in which case you should return for an earlier evaluation.

More Info
Experiencing bleeding after a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure is relatively common, but the characteristics and duration of that bleeding can vary significantly from person to person. In your case, your girlfriend underwent a D&C on December 19 and is experiencing bleeding five days later, with an increase in flow and the presence of dark brown clots. This situation raises several important considerations.
Firstly, it is important to understand that after a D&C, some bleeding is expected as the uterus heals. This bleeding can last for several days to a couple of weeks, and it may start as light spotting and gradually become heavier before tapering off. The presence of clots, especially if they are small, can also be normal. However, larger clots or a sudden increase in bleeding can be a cause for concern.
In your girlfriend's case, the bleeding was stable for the first few days but then increased significantly on the evening of the 23rd, accompanied by abdominal pain. This change in her symptoms could indicate a few possibilities:
1. Normal Healing Process: Sometimes, the uterus may expel remaining tissue or blood clots, which can lead to heavier bleeding. This is often part of the healing process and may not necessarily indicate a complication.
2. Retained Products of Conception: If any tissue remains in the uterus after the D&C, it can lead to continued bleeding and cramping. This retained tissue can cause the body to react by expelling it, resulting in heavier bleeding and clots.
3. Infection: An increase in bleeding, especially if accompanied by pain, could also suggest an infection. Signs of infection may include fever, foul-smelling discharge, or severe abdominal pain. If any of these symptoms are present, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
4. Other Complications: While less common, complications such as uterine perforation or abnormal healing can occur. These situations may also present with increased bleeding and pain.
Given that your girlfriend is experiencing heavier bleeding and abdominal pain, it is advisable for her to contact her healthcare provider as soon as possible. A medical professional can perform an examination, possibly including an ultrasound, to determine if there are any retained products or other issues that need to be addressed.
In summary, while some bleeding after a D&C is normal, significant changes in the pattern of bleeding, especially when accompanied by pain, warrant further evaluation. It is always better to err on the side of caution and consult with a healthcare provider to ensure that everything is healing properly and to rule out any complications.
