Pain during breathing in the lower chest?

Doctor, I have been experiencing pain in the lower part of my chest whenever I breathe for some time now.
It feels like a cramp, and taking a deep breath is very uncomfortable.
I can only manage small, slow breaths to ease the discomfort.
I'm not sure what this condition might be, and which specialty I should consult.
Additionally, I have a congenital hole in my heart that was supposed to close on its own during infancy but did not.
I'm wondering if this is related or if my weight might be a contributing factor.

Hello, first check the chest and heart for any issues; it could be intercostal neuralgia.
Wishing you good health, Dr.

Understanding pain below the chest during breathing can be quite distressing, and it is essential to approach this issue with a comprehensive understanding of potential causes and appropriate solutions. Your description of experiencing pain below the chest that feels like cramping during inhalation suggests that there may be several underlying factors contributing to your discomfort.

Firstly, it is important to consider the anatomical structures located in the area below the chest. This region includes the diaphragm, which is the primary muscle involved in breathing, as well as the lower ribs, intercostal muscles, and various organs such as the stomach, liver, and spleen. Pain during breathing can arise from issues related to any of these structures.

One common cause of pain during inhalation is muscle strain or injury. If you have engaged in activities that require heavy lifting or intense physical exertion, it is possible that the intercostal muscles (the muscles between the ribs) have been strained. This type of pain is often sharp and worsens with deep breaths, coughing, or sneezing.

Another possibility is a condition known as pleurisy, which is inflammation of the pleura, the membranes surrounding the lungs. Pleurisy can cause sharp pain that worsens with breathing, coughing, or sneezing. It is often associated with respiratory infections or other lung conditions.

Given your mention of a congenital heart defect (a hole in the heart), it is crucial to consider how this may relate to your symptoms. While many individuals with such conditions lead normal lives, certain complications can arise, particularly if the defect affects blood flow or oxygenation. If you experience symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, or increased heart rate, it is essential to consult with a cardiologist to evaluate the impact of your heart condition on your overall health.

Additionally, obesity can contribute to respiratory issues and discomfort. Excess weight can place additional pressure on the diaphragm and lungs, making it more challenging to breathe deeply and potentially leading to pain. Weight management through a balanced diet and regular exercise can be beneficial not only for your respiratory health but also for your overall well-being.

In terms of which medical specialty to consult, starting with a primary care physician is advisable. They can perform an initial evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, to determine the cause of your pain. Depending on their findings, they may refer you to a pulmonologist (lung specialist) if they suspect a respiratory issue or a cardiologist for further evaluation of your heart condition.

In summary, pain below the chest during breathing can stem from various causes, including muscle strain, pleurisy, or complications related to a congenital heart defect. It is essential to seek medical attention to accurately diagnose the underlying issue and develop an appropriate treatment plan. Lifestyle modifications, such as weight management and avoiding strenuous activities, may also help alleviate your symptoms. Remember, timely intervention is key to addressing any potential health concerns effectively.
