Itchy genital area?

In the past two to three days, I've been experiencing itching in the genital area.
When I took a shower, I noticed small bumps on the outer part of the vulva that are itchy, and I find myself wanting to scratch them.
Occasionally, I also feel itching in the anal area.
Additionally, I experience some pain during intercourse.
What could be the reason for this?

Miss Zhang, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2015/12/26

More Info

Itching and discomfort in the genital area can be caused by a variety of factors, and it's important to understand the potential causes and solutions to address these symptoms effectively. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing localized itching and possibly some irritation or discomfort, particularly during intimate activities. Here are some common causes and considerations:

Common Causes of Itching and Discomfort
1. Infections:
- Yeast Infections: A common cause of itching in the genital area, especially in women. Symptoms may include thick, white discharge and irritation.

- Bacterial Vaginosis: This condition can lead to itching and an unusual discharge, often with a fishy odor.

- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Conditions such as herpes, chlamydia, or gonorrhea can cause itching, discomfort, and pain during intercourse.

2. Skin Conditions:
- Contact Dermatitis: This occurs when the skin reacts to irritants or allergens, such as soaps, detergents, or personal care products.

- Psoriasis or Eczema: These chronic skin conditions can also affect the genital area, leading to itching and discomfort.

3. Hygiene Practices:
- Inadequate or excessive cleaning can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and yeast in the genital area, leading to irritation or infections.

4. Hormonal Changes:
- Fluctuations in hormones, particularly during menstrual cycles or menopause, can lead to dryness and irritation.

5. Physical Irritation:
- Friction from clothing, sexual activity, or even excessive scratching can exacerbate itching and discomfort.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Maintain Good Hygiene:
- Gently wash the genital area with mild soap and water. Avoid using heavily scented products that can irritate the skin.

2. Wear Breathable Fabrics:
- Opt for cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing to reduce moisture and friction.

3. Avoid Irritants:
- Identify and eliminate potential irritants, such as certain soaps, lotions, or laundry detergents.

4. Over-the-Counter Treatments:
- For yeast infections, antifungal creams or suppositories can be effective. For dermatitis, hydrocortisone cream may help reduce inflammation and itching.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider:
- If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s crucial to see a healthcare professional. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including tests for infections or other underlying conditions.

6. Discuss Sexual Health:
- If you experience pain during intercourse, it’s important to discuss this with your partner and a healthcare provider. Pain can be a sign of various conditions, including infections or physical issues that may need to be addressed.

Conclusion
Itching and discomfort in the genital area can stem from various causes, ranging from infections to skin conditions or irritants. It's essential to pay attention to your symptoms and seek medical advice if they persist or worsen. A healthcare provider can help diagnose the issue accurately and recommend appropriate treatments. Remember, open communication with your partner and healthcare provider is key to addressing these concerns effectively.
