The stool varies in thickness?

Since I caught a cold and took Western medicine, the consistency of my stools has been inconsistent.
Even after switching to Chinese medicine, it has not improved, and this has been going on for about three weeks.
I have a regular bowel movement every morning, and sometimes I go one or two times a day.
Today, I experienced sharp pain in my anus during a bowel movement (with a normal thickness), and there was some bleeding.
The thinner stools are easier to pass, but sometimes the stools are thick at the front and thin at the back.
Today, out of three stools, one was thin, but not all of them were thin.

Dr. Xu Kaixi reply Surgery

Blood in the stool or changes in bowel habits, including alterations in stool shape or consistency, are abnormal gastrointestinal function changes.
It is recommended to visit a gastroenterologist for further evaluation.

Understanding irregular stool sizes can be a complex issue, often influenced by various factors including diet, hydration, medication, and underlying health conditions. In your case, it seems that the irregularity in stool size began after taking Western medication for a cold, and it has persisted even after switching to traditional Chinese medicine. Additionally, you mentioned experiencing pain and bleeding during bowel movements, which is concerning and warrants further investigation.

Causes of Irregular Stool Sizes
1. Dietary Factors: The composition of your diet plays a significant role in stool consistency and size. A diet low in fiber can lead to harder, smaller stools, while a high-fiber diet can result in larger, softer stools. If your diet has changed recently, this could explain the irregularities.

2. Hydration: Adequate fluid intake is essential for maintaining healthy bowel movements. Dehydration can lead to harder stools, while proper hydration can help keep stools soft and regular.

3. Medications: Certain medications, including those for colds, can affect bowel movements. Some may cause constipation or diarrhea, leading to variations in stool size and consistency. If you have recently started or stopped any medications, this could be a contributing factor.

4. Gastrointestinal Conditions: Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or infections can lead to changes in stool size and consistency. Symptoms like pain and bleeding during bowel movements are particularly concerning and could indicate an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

5. Stress and Anxiety: Psychological factors can also impact bowel habits. Stress can lead to changes in gut motility, resulting in irregular stool sizes.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Dietary Adjustments: Consider increasing your fiber intake by incorporating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes into your diet. Fiber helps regulate bowel movements and can lead to more consistent stool sizes.

2. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking enough water throughout the day. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water daily, but adjust based on your activity level and climate.

3. Monitor Medications: If you suspect that your medications are affecting your bowel movements, consult with your healthcare provider. They may be able to adjust your prescriptions or suggest alternatives.

4. Seek Medical Attention: Given the symptoms of pain and bleeding during bowel movements, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional. They may recommend diagnostic tests such as a colonoscopy or stool tests to rule out any serious conditions.

5. Stress Management: If you feel that stress or anxiety may be contributing to your symptoms, consider stress-reduction techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or counseling.

Conclusion
Irregular stool sizes can result from a variety of factors, and while some may be benign, others could indicate a more serious health issue. The presence of pain and bleeding during bowel movements is particularly concerning and should not be ignored. It is essential to seek medical advice to ensure that any underlying conditions are properly diagnosed and treated. Keeping a record of your diet, bowel habits, and any other symptoms can be helpful for your healthcare provider in determining the best course of action.
