Hello, I would like to inquire about hair loss?
Hello: I dyed my hair two weeks ago, and about a week after dyeing, I started to lose a lot of hair when I washed it, even to the point of having small clumps come out.
However, the amount of hair loss when I’m not washing it seems normal.
The shedding is most severe during washing and when I comb my hair afterward.
I went to the hospital for blood tests at National Cheng Kung University Hospital, where I consulted with an internal medicine doctor, but the results showed no abnormalities, yet I'm still experiencing hair loss! Last week, I visited a dermatologist, but the doctor didn't examine my scalp thoroughly; they just glanced and tugged a bit, suggesting it probably isn't stress-related.
They mentioned three possible causes: 1.
Female pattern hair loss, 2.
Iron and zinc deficiency, 3.
Seborrheic dermatitis.
Currently, I am using the shampoo and topical solution prescribed by the doctor.
Although it has only been a few days, it doesn’t seem to be effective.
How long does it typically take for treatment to show results? I want to thoroughly check if there are any issues with my scalp, but it seems that regular dermatology clinics may not be able to assess it accurately? My hair is becoming finer and oilier, and I’ve noticed more prominent scalp flaking recently.
Sometimes, I even have small patches that look crusty.
Could you please explain this to me? I’m very afraid of losing all my hair!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello: Regarding abnormal hair loss, you can refer to the articles on the Dermatology Expert Health Network at http://www.drskincare.com.tw/Qa/Detail.aspx?ID=132 and http://www.drskincare.com.tw/Qa/Detail.aspx?ID=133.
Seborrheic dermatitis often presents with dandruff and crusting on the scalp.
Typically, treatment lasts for 1-2 weeks, during which the inflammation improves, and the hair loss condition may also lessen.
If the hair loss persists without improvement, it is recommended that you visit a dermatology department at a medical center for further examination.
Thank you!

More Info
Hair loss after dyeing can be a distressing experience, especially for young individuals like yourself. The concerns you've raised about your hair becoming thinner, feeling dry, and experiencing increased shedding are valid and warrant a closer look. Let's break down the potential causes and solutions for your situation.
Causes of Hair Loss After Dyeing
1. Chemical Damage: Hair dye contains various chemicals, including ammonia and peroxide, which can weaken the hair structure. Repeated exposure can lead to dryness, brittleness, and ultimately hair loss. This is particularly true if the dyeing process is done frequently or if the hair is already damaged.
2. Telogen Effluvium: This is a common condition where hair follicles enter a resting phase due to stress, hormonal changes, or trauma. The stress of dyeing, especially if combined with other factors like lack of sleep or poor nutrition, can trigger this condition, leading to increased hair shedding.
3. Nutritional Deficiencies: As your dermatologist mentioned, deficiencies in iron and zinc can contribute to hair loss. These minerals are crucial for healthy hair growth, and a lack of them can lead to thinning hair.
4. Scalp Conditions: Conditions like seborrheic dermatitis or contact dermatitis from hair dye can cause inflammation and irritation of the scalp, leading to hair loss. The presence of scabs or crusting on the scalp, as you described, may indicate an underlying scalp issue that needs to be addressed.
5. Androgenetic Alopecia: While this is more commonly associated with genetic predisposition, women can also experience a form of this condition, often referred to as female pattern hair loss. This can manifest as thinning hair across the scalp.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Consult a Specialist: Since you have already seen a dermatologist, consider seeking a trichologist, a specialist in hair and scalp health. They can provide a more detailed examination of your scalp and hair follicles, potentially using specialized tools to assess the health of your hair.
2. Topical Treatments: Continue using the medicated shampoo and topical solutions prescribed by your dermatologist. These treatments can take several weeks to show noticeable results, so patience is essential. If you do not see improvement after a reasonable period, follow up with your doctor for alternative options.
3. Nutritional Support: Focus on a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals that support hair health. Foods high in iron (like spinach, lentils, and red meat) and zinc (such as nuts, seeds, and whole grains) can be beneficial. Additionally, consider discussing with your healthcare provider the possibility of taking supplements if dietary changes are insufficient.
4. Gentle Hair Care: Avoid harsh hair treatments and minimize the use of heat styling tools. Opt for sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners designed for damaged hair. When washing your hair, be gentle to avoid further stress on the hair follicles.
5. Stress Management: Since stress can exacerbate hair loss, incorporating stress-reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise can be beneficial. Ensuring you get adequate sleep is also crucial for overall health and hair growth.
6. Monitor Your Progress: Keep track of your hair loss and any changes in your scalp condition. Documenting your symptoms can help your healthcare provider make informed decisions about your treatment plan.
Conclusion
Hair loss after dyeing can stem from various factors, including chemical damage, nutritional deficiencies, and scalp conditions. It is essential to approach this issue holistically, considering both external treatments and internal health. By consulting with specialists, maintaining a healthy diet, and practicing gentle hair care, you can work towards restoring your hair's health. Remember, hair growth takes time, and with the right approach, you can improve your situation. If your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice.
